Kitchen faucet screw-on spray adapter / tap aerator
« on: November 21, 2008, 02:19:26 PM »

This was always one of the first things I'd get, whenever I moved into a new flat. They were sold everywhere, from Safeway to Target to Home Depot, etc. For the life of me, I can't find anything even remotely like this over here. Has anyone spotted one in the wild? Any clue where I'd look? I've tried looking online in a bunch of places (tesco, the range, amazon, ikea, and random other sites), but no luck. My sink's mixertap has this unbearably weird setup where the hot water is delivered in a separate internal pipe to the tip of the tap and it causes a focused direct stream that splashes everywhere. It's driving me bonkers. =) Plus, it's nice to have a swivel tap.

As an addendum, does anyone know if a US one would fit over here? Are the standard tap sizes/threading the same (guessing probably not)?

That's the standard arrangement for kitchen mixers here, because of the traditional plumbing arrangements which result in the hot water being delivered at much lower pressure than the cold.   The spout is typically a concentric arrangement with hot delivered down the central tube and cold in the part surrounding it, the mixing taking place outside the spout as the water falls.

When we first moved into this house I burned my head when trying to wash my hair in the kitchen sink because I did not know that taps were done that way.   We have since changed the tap.  You can get taps that do mix the water before it comes out.  They are called single flow taps as opposed to dual flow taps.

Here is a diagram.

Hi Mary, and welcome to the forum.

One thing you need to watch with using a single-flow mixer is the comparative hot & cold water pressures though.  With the traditional (British) vented hot-water system, the hot at the kitchen sink is at much lower pressure than the cold, and a single-flow unit will result it being quite tricky to adjust the flows for the right temperature.

With the pressurized systems which have gradually been becoming more common for new homes and rebuilds in recent years, the hot is delivered to the sink at the same pressure as the cold, and the true mixer tap then works fine (which is how it is in the U.S.).

It's quite common to find the traditional dual-flow unit fitted to kitchen sinks even where a single-flow would work, as they are so widely available and have for years been the norm.

Can I just say mega-super-awesome thanks to the folks in this thread - the starter and the responders!  I just bought one of these today at my local Lakeland and even though it lengthened my kitchen tap like 4 inches (I didn't have a threaded spout, needed the big adapter thing.... yada yada yada) and the water flow is BRILLIANT!  No cold-hot-cold-hot-cold-hot, no spraying all over the GD place, the ability to direct flow, PRESSURE, etc.  I've never been happier doing dishes than now with this basic piece of plumbing improvement!
They should hand these out to Americans coming over with visas that hint they are going to be staying a while.

That would stop an awful lot of arguments on this board!  Great idea!

Just rub salt in the wound, why don't you...

I have separate taps in my current kitchen. :P ;)

There are many manufacturers, styles, and designs of kitchen taps available on the market these days. The market trends can change and develop in the blink of an eye. So how do you choose the right kitchen taps that compliment your current kitchen style? How do you choose the right kitchen taps (or brassware as it's referred to within the industry) to compliment a remodel?
