Suet substitutions ?

I am trying to make this mincemeat recipe along with a Christmas cake and wondered if anyone had any experience with making traditional UK deserts in the USA: http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/home-made-christmas-mincemeat,1235,RC.html

I don't really have time to order Atora and I wouldn't really want to use beef fat from a butcher...

I wonder if Crisco would work?

Would Crisco have the same texture, though?  It wouldn't have that grainy feeling that suet does.  Although, it was marketed as a kosher alternative to lard a few decades ago, so maybe it would work.

It does!  Not super solid, but enough that you could probably shred it a bit. 

When are you making it?  I'm heading to Whole Foods this weekend, and would be happy to ask if they have suggestions about what to substitute.

Not sure, but suet is dead nasty IMO - so if you find something that works alternatively I'll be very interested to hear about it!  :)

I made Steve a jam roly-poly one time, that he thought was lovely, but I was  [smiley=bleck.gif]  All that suet sat in my stomach like a rock.  :-X

veg suet is not as heavy and works just as well.  I made dumplings on Monday!

I bet Crisco would do the trick. It's not exactly the same, but then, I don't think anything is the same as suet!

YEAH!! Thank you Teletabby... I tried Google earlier and couldn't find a really nice one and that one looks like the ticket! 

I'd still like to know about suet though as I will be making more traditional puds here for my DH. :)  Now that we can't meander down to the pub and get one!

Odd as I am I made my first ever thing with Crisco today....  I just have never used shortening...  just butter.
