Availability of gluten-free food?
« on: November 24, 2008, 09:52:16 PM »
I'm moving to Newcastle in a couple of months, and I'm wondering how hard it will be to eat like I normally do..
I eat a lot of fresh produce, so I know that will only get better, with the widespread availability of farmer's markets, etc.

I'm mainly concerned with all of the gluten-free, dairy-free, and organic products I eat on a daily basis. Are there many options when it comes to these foods? I don't suppose there will be a Trader Joe's in Newcastle... :P

Also, what are the prices like for these specialty foods?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Most supermarkets do a line of "free from" type foods, there are always a lot of choices here.

There are loads and loads of gluten-free foods! Better than the US, I'd say. I took some gluten-free Jaffa cakes to my little cousin and she was thrilled. Organics are easy to find, too, and it seems to me that there's not as great a price difference between non-organic and organic. I haven't paid attention to dairy-free, but I'd expect it's a similar situation.

I know nothing about gluten-free, but I'm lactose intolerant and honestly, finding already-prepared dairy free foods has been a challenge.  Milk is no problem as lactose-free milk is widely available as is soy/rice milks, and I have seen soy yogurts about.  But that's pretty much it- beyond that my only option is to eliminate dairy entirely or make all my normally lactose containing dishes from scratch with substitutes. Restaurants are hard unless I want to eat salad or meat and potatoes.  And sooner or later I'm going to have to give up chocolate too :(

My Sainsburys has a huge "free from" section with tons of gluten free stuff as well as items like egg free mayo. I've seen tofutti ("cream cheese") at larger Holland & Barretts. Waitrose carries a couple of lines of vegan friendly meat substitutes (unlike Sainsburys who seem to only carry things that have egg). There are also some online retailers that sell chilled foods if there's something particular you need.

I found it better than the states, there are specialty stores in the US but most supermarkes do carry free from and gluten free. I've seen a whole shelf full of stuff, my old roomate would've been in heaven! Good luck with the move.
