pie pans
« on: November 25, 2008, 09:58:29 AM »
I don't have any pie pans.  My MIL said she had some, but when I went over there, they turned out to be "flan dishes" or something of that sort.... they look like ceramic tart pans!  Can you get regular pie pans at Wilco's or something like that, or should I just be adventurous and use the ones my MIL has for the pumpkin and pecan pies?  Not too sure about those, but I guess they would work.....  ???

My MIL has glass pie dishes just like the ones I had back in the States.  I'm sure you could find them at Wilkinson's or the grocery store or Ikea or wherever else you like to get housewares.

I haven't seen any at the grocery stores here, only the ones that look like tart pans with the scalloped edges.  But I will check at Wilco's after work, I guess.

I checked the wilkinsons website and they have pyrex deep pie dishes.

Sainsbury's also has them.  At least, that's what their site says.

I definitely checked my local Sainsbury's and never saw any pie pans, only the scalloped edge pans.  I will take a look at Wilco's tonight, that link said they were out of stock online, but hopefully my local store will have some.
If not, do you think I could use those flan dishes to bake my pies?  They aren't very deep, but I don't know what options I would have if I can't find any pie pans, unless I try to make some tarts or something instead....

I was looking for cake tins at Morrissons yesterday and saw something they called a sandwich tin (!) which looked like what I would bake a cake or pie in except maybe a tiny bit smaller in circumference.

Also, all the cake tins I saw where very deep--I'm sure they will work for me just fine, but they just seemed super deep to me, and not like what I've used back in the US...

What about places like John Lewis (although could be pricey), M&S, Bhs, ASDA, Argos, Woolworths etc.? I got several kitchen items from Argos and from Woolworths when I was a student. There may also be some specialist cookware shops around that sell nothing but cooking utensils and pans :).

If you to a Google image search for 'pie dish', it comes up with several different possibilities - everything from those flan dishes to deeper pie dishes (with or without fluting on the edges).

Sandwich tins are what you would probably be used to from the US and work fine and that's what you would use for a victoria sponge or something like that (particularly if you're using UK recipes - the volume of batter will be appropriate for common sizes of tins) but I tend to use the deep ones for all cakes - think they're calles springform tins or something in the US? I had one for cheescakes - the ones with the removable sides.

ETA: http://thecookskitchen.com/browse_9361 - only £4.95 and for about £9 they can ship overnight!

Yep, the bottoms were separate from the sides--one was called a springform, the other one wasn't though.

OK, now I am stressing out a bit.... there is nothing on the ASDA site that looks like what I need... not even a sandwich tin.  There was nothing on the Argos site that I could see, there was a bakeware set, but it only had small pie tins like for savoury pies.  The one shown on the Wilco's site was perfect, but it said on the site that it was out of stock, which might mean they won't have it at our local store.  I checked at Tesco's while we were there, and there weren't any there.  None at Sainsbury's either.   ???

I bought a normal US-type nonstick pie pan at TK Maxx.

Don't stress Jewlz!  I'm sure you'll find something somewhere!  If worse comes to worse you can always borrow one from a neighbor or workmate!

:\\\'(  I will be so sad if I can't have pecan pie!!!  Plus I have everyone all built-up about the pies, and stupid me thought it would be easy to find a pie tin.  We live in the middle of nowhere, there are no TK Maxx stores around or anything like that.  Wilco's is the only option, but they might not have them either.  Anyone have a suggestion or alternate recipe using those flan dishes my MIL has?  She always just bakes pies on a regular plate, but that won't do for a sweet deep dish pie.

As broke as we are, and as much as I have already spent on food, I think DH might keel over if I tell him we have to spend £15 on a pie pan.  I know it doesn't seem like a lot, but it is to us at the moment.  Guess I will have to do without, or find something else to use the pumpkin pie filler for.
Thanks anyway guys.   :\\\'(
