Bookmooch

Anyone done this?

www.bookmooch.com

I'm very tempted because I've been reading books like it was the end of the world and Jon is getting quite annoyed at not only how much I'm spending but the increasing pile that has formed next to my bed.

I'd like to think I can go and get any book I'd like to read for free and all I need to do is get rid of the books I already have.

I wish I did this because it makes such good sense. But I'm a total book packrat! I can't bear to part with mine!  :-\\\\

But I do have a lot of friends who do it all the time and they love it.

Yep, I'm on there.  It was great for getting rid of duplicates, and for snagging all those books I'd been eyeing in bookshops for a while.

Be warned that you're very very unlikely to unload any copies of Dan Brown books or Bridget Jones books.  :)

My DH has used this for a few months and he has been very pleased with it so far. I'm pleased that his spending sprees at Borders/Amazon have decreased.  ;D

I'm going to have to give it a try. This year I've had a voracious appetite for books and I've lost count of how many I've read, although I think it's somewhere near 50. A good deal of those I've borrowed but I'm afraid to say that the majority I've bought. Most of them are from Greenmetropolis, so it's not made that massive a dint in our wallets but when I can't get them on Greemetropolis, I go to Borders and it gets expensive.

But I can't stop my addiction. I don't know whats up with me, I just can't read enough.

My wife's on there, but she's had a few "choice" experiences with some members.  For those who aren't familiar, BookMooch works on a points system.  You get a point for sending a book (more for international, plus partial points for listing books) and it costs a point to receive a book.  If the book arrives in poor condition, it basically goes for free (sender doesn't get a point, recipient doesn't spend one).
Well, my wife sent a book and the recipient reported it as a bad shipment because the envelope was damaged (not the book).  After asking other members, she tried to get her point from the admins since the book itself was undamaged.  They said it was out of their hands.  Two weeks later, the same person asked my wife for another book.  My wife declined the request, not wanting to chance the same thing happening again.  However, the person reported my wife and she lost another point for rejecting the request.  So, one book sent and, instead of gaining a point, she lost one...and the recipient got a perfectly acceptable book for free.  My wife has since not used BookMooch nearly as much because it seems like she's just getting burnt by other members.
I don't use it because the books I read aren't the kind that are normally the "pass it on" kind (try finding any of Nietzsche's critical editions in German).

I was thinking of doing this, because I generally don't reread my books unless I really like them. They end up just sitting there since nobody else will read them. I have so many I'd like to send off if only to collect more again to take their place.

I did worry about certain things happening though, and according to impleri's post, I was right to worry. Who knows, I may just end up using the library instead, and donate my old books somewhere.

That's a shame that your wife has had such problems.

The thing is, I'm so keen on reading that I'd still be tempted to do it.

Or, tempted to start something myself, maybe within the forum. I'm not sure how much you lot would want to read what I've got...

I've used it a bit.  I don't really have the library anymore to really take advantage of it, but in my limited experience, I've had a good few exchanges.
