That's the crazy part-- 6 months in our case isn't even half, it's FULL because it's a 6-month lease!  We're seeing some houses later today with 2 other estate agents who didn't seem to have the same ridiculous take on it as the first two, so hopefully we'll have some luck.

Well, that seems even sillier. If they're worried you're not here legally, you can prove that via paperwork. If they're worried you'll trash the house, they can request a bigger deposit. But I'm not sure what objections they could have to a tenant who pays the rent entirely upfront: credit history or no credit history. In other words, I feel your pain. :)

And good luck today!
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

We still haven't found any private rentals, but we went and talked to 2 other estate agents today (McManus and Poole and Dacre, Son, and Hartley in Keighley) and had some luck.  They both said that they could theoretically rent to us (pending individual landlords' approval) if we put down 6 months' rent plus bond upfront.  We saw a property today that we loved, so we're going to apply for it!

Okay, in case anyone was following this thread, I thought I'd give an update!  We went to Reeds Rains in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire and had the best estate agent ever.  He drove us to see a house, got the landlord to lower the price, skipped the credit check, and we're moving in on Saturday!!!
