Vegan restaurants in Leeds or York?
« on: December 05, 2008, 01:15:40 PM »
If anyone can recommend any good vegan restaurants, or even any ordinary restaurants that do some vegan food, in the Leeds or York area, I would love to hear about them.  My vegan niece is coming for a visit soon, and I would like to take her out for a meal that she would enjoy.  Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

A lot of restaurants today usually have veggie/vegan options on the menu - some more than others.  Those above are particularly well known either for all-veggie or very veggie-friendly menus.

Thanks, Mrs R.  I'll check these out.  I'm not sure if my niece is into Thai or Indian food; something I'll have to find out, I guess.

Roots & Fruits is more of a lunch place (IMO), although I think they are open until 7 pm.  They don't serve alcohol, but you can bring your own - there's a £3 corkage fee.  (I've eaten there & thought it was okay, but nothing spectacular.  However, it is an all-veggie place.)

And like I said, a lot of other places will have veggie or vegan options.  Hansas and Chaophraya are both excellent restaurants, btw!  I think you'll tend to find most of the veggie-oriented restaurants around here will be Asian food of some type.

I know - I was particularly hoping to find out about other types of restaurants.  Should have said so, I guess.

I work with a vegan, and we've had/are having work dinners at these places. The first one was happy to do vegan options on the spot, and the vegan was pleased with them. (I thought the food was average-to-good, but most of the group really liked it.) At the second, some vegan options were arranged in advance for our group. We're going tomorrow night; I can tell you how it is after that. These are more British/general European/whatever type restaurants--nothing specifically ethnic.

The Lime Tree is usually well reviewed.

There is a funky tapas/world foods place in York that has plenty of vegan options but I can't remember the name of it at the moment...

Thanks Elynor, I'll take a look at those places.  And yes, I'd love to know what you think of The Lime Tree after you've been.

Gershamabob, please let me know if you remember the name of that place, or even where it is in York, as we'll probably be in York at some point.

The Lime Tree was quite nice--not mind-blowing, but better than Brasserie 44, I thought. The butternut squash ravioli I had as a starter was really fab, and I wished I could have had that as a main! The vegan options looked nice, too, with the possible exception of the dessert.

Thanks Elynor.  It turned out that my niece likes ethnic food, after all, and we ended up at the Sheesh Mahal, my hubbie's favourite restaurant.  They do some vegan food there.  But we'll possibly check out the Lime Tree next time around.

We also found a place in York called El Piano, I think, that did lots of vegan stuff.  It was good, and even managed to satisfy my DH, a committed carnivore.
