Small round bread loaves
« on: December 08, 2008, 10:17:50 AM »
Ok so I'm dying to have soup or chili in a bread bowl.  Granted it won't be sourdough, but I was wondering if anyone has ever seen small round loaves which are suitable for putting soup in?

Why not bake one?  Then you can have your sourdough and eat it too.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

I actually have a yummy looking recipe for parmesan bread bowls, but it does call for buttermilk. People have said it can be found here though. The recipe looks pretty easy.

you can get buttermilk at Sainsbury's for sure.  I use it in my cornbread.

And at Tesco and Morrison's, too. I use it in scones.

But have you checked a local bakery or deli? I've seen small round loaves before! I also see sourdough bread all over the place, but maybe not in the right shape/size for your soup.

Where do you see sourdough?!?!?!  I tried making it a couple weeks ago.  Worked on my starter for a week, but it just didn't turn out.  I'm going to try to make another starter sometime in the future.

Another reason I'm asking is the cafe near DH's work is looking to revamp their menu and I was going to suggest that they do soup in bread bowls, since they're sooo yummy and I've never seen it anywhere here.  Just thinking about it made me want to make french onion soup and eat it out of a bread bowl :)  I'm going into the town centre today where there are a few bakeries to see if they've got small loaves.

In Weston, Astills of Worle and Winnie's Bakery both do small loaves that might work. (I haven't tried it, but have pondered.) Because they're small bakeries, you might also be able to get them to make one for you on a special order kinda thing.
Another shameless promotion for www.mclevey.com, the best place on the internet to buy art.

At farm shops, bakeries and delis! Lots of places! Mostly upscale (i.e., expensive) foodie places, but lots of them!

I've never looked for it at big supermarkets, but I think if it were there someone would have posted that information already!

I've bought non-sourdough soup bowl style bread loaves at sainsburys.

Easy buttermilk replacement if you have US measuring around: 1 tablespoon vinegar + enough milk to fill the rest of one liquid cup.

They have small round bread loaves at the Co-op near us... I think they are cheese bread, rather than sourdough, but that still sounds tasty to me!
