Butties
« on: June 04, 2004, 08:50:37 AM »
This food talk thread is great--I'm glad I'm not the only person who has looked on in horror as her partner consumed the indigestible!

My question is--what's your take on "butties"? I'll never forget the day I watched aghast as my then boyfriend (now hubby!!) ate a disturbingly carb-laden meal of lasagna, peas and chips (with a token sprig of rocket on the side) then proceeded to thickly butter a floury bap and smash a pile of greasy chips into it. The butter was dripping out of it onto the plate and I just sat there with my mouth hanging open. LOL I said "what the HECK are you doing!" and he answered, "I'm having a chip butty it's GORGEOUS!" I find chip butties, bacon butties and anything else served between two slices heavily buttered bread disgusting in the extreme. What do you think? (He still loves his butties and eats one everytime we have chips, oven or otherwise...come to think of it, he'll even make a buttie with roasted potatoes. How does he stay so skinny!)

Personally, I love chip butties.  Our local chippie makes awesome chips and they are lovely between two slices of thick white bread or on a Hovis square roll with butter (I prefer olive spread, actually).  And bacon butties are lovely, too.

Well, I have to say I haven't had a chip buttie and the DF is not a big takeaway kind of person (the occasional chips with curry sauce - ugh!). However I have made bacon and fish butties and like them. According to Jamie Oliver, the bread of a bacon buttie should be spread (or dredged through - on one side) the bacon fat left from cooking. I prefer this to butter. A fish buttie is just fish fingers on bread. I like it with mayo or tartar sauce. Gotta say though, I can't even remember the last time we actually had them! We do BLTs quite a bit though!

As for the carb laden dinners... I do agree with you there. Lasagne with peas and chips?  Curry with rice - and chips??? What is it that so many people consider the pea such a great vegetable?  ;D I mean, I like them OK (as long as they are the petit pois or fresh from the garden) but peas are one of the least nutritionally valuable veggies. Just because they're green I think a lot of people think they are great for you. Still, what really gets me is the chips with curry. The DF has an uncle who insists you have to have chips with curry b/c the curry (even with loads of rice) 'leaves you hungry in an hour).

And yes, he's thin, too.  >:(

The only difference between the new all-you-can-eat Oriental buffet on our high street and the one we used to go to in Florida is.....there's chips on the buffet!

Just in case I were to forget I was in England.  [smiley=laugh4.gif]

I don't understand the chip buttie, either.  My DH frequently makes them when we have chips with dinner, too.  To me, it's like making a mashed potato sandwich!  Blech...like a mouthful of paste (I'd imagine...I've never tried to eat one!).   [smiley=puke.gif]

But bacon butties....yeah, I understand those!  I love anything with bacon!   ;D

Mmmm...what would be wrong with a mashed potato sandwich, then?!

Personally - I am a carb-addict.  So bring it on.  I especially love left-over turkey and stuffing sandwiches.  Now it can't get better than that - bread in the stuffing on bread - a bread on bread sandwich!

Yummy!

I have not had any of these butties, I asked Richard about them and he does it without the butter (He is not a dairy person)  Though I just don't get the butter thing on a sandwich anyway.  I never heard of it till I got here.  Though, I will admit, the tuna and cucumber sandwich with butter on it was so yummy!!!  But really how do these people stay slim eating all that fat?  I'm staying away from carbs as well, so eating here is very hard!!!  Oh well.

I love bacon butties!  So add me to the list.  Love BLT's too.... with streaky bacon though and fresh baked bread!

To be honest how much grosser is mayo on a sandwhich than butter?  Both are loaded with fat.  Or something like Velvetta?  Pure grease with an odd orange color not seen in nature.   ;D  Sorry for those missing it, but I can't stand it.

As for the chip sandwhich (I have actually had potato salad sandwhiches with my Korean roomates) I think it has to be good.  Don't think I could stomach so much butter that it drips down the side though.  How many of you put potato chips (crisps) on your sandwhich as kids or even now?

I'm not big on sandwiches.. not any kind really.  The whole idea of having a bit of ham or bacon between two pieces of bread with nothing else besides butter just doesn't sound good :(  It seems like it'd have no flavor and be rather bland.  The occasional sausage sandwich is nice, but even then I have to toast the bread because I can't stand a big soggy mouthful of bread and chips and.. blahhhhhh

i dunno about butties.  i've had one and they are ok....maybe something i can get used to.  I'd probabally like the chip one.  i'm not a fan of UK bacon so the bacon buttie soured me to them.

Oh yeah.. Sean even puts butter on the bun when he has hot dogs.  He cuts the bun along the TOP.. not the side.. and butters the bun, then places the hot dog on TOP of the bun???? then adds ketchup????????????  WTF is that about?

For those that prefer mayo to butter on your sarnies ...

If you are ordering sandwiches out, you may want to say, "Mayo, no butter please."  There have been instances where I've forgotten to say that and had BOTH on my sandwich.

But that lovely fake butter/grease whatever it is they put on fast food is just so good!  [smiley=puke.gif] I hate going to Arby's and having to say...please do not slather that crap on my bun.  I just want a bun no additional grease please.  It's bad enough for you! ....BK does this too.... can't remember if McD's does it. Oh and do not get me started on old oil... when you buy FF and they tasted like burnt bits of fish or chicken.  Or when you go into Walmart or where ever and the whole places smells like a huge old greasy queasy vat of oil.  Ugh... I am making myself sick thinking of it! They do it at SAMS club too... yuck!  Sorry.... I love food, but that smell can make me lose my appetite in two seconds flat.

I do love mayo... garlic mayo --ailioili!!! I just can't eat too much of it....
