I've heard of that happening.. but the thing MUST be in the cat somewhere, and your vet back home must have read it recently.. heck, people at the airport read my cat's chip before I got on the plane last time.  So.. hope they find it quickly and all works out well.

I've heard of it happening, too. They can migrate under the skin (I think I read about one that made it all the way down an animal's foreleg). Also, I think they can malfunction.

But surely your vet was recently able to locate it Stateside or you couldn't have gotten the last-minute paperwork done. So...what gives?

Hi all,

Well they just sedated and ex-rayed my cat and the chip was nowhere to be found.

Of course it was read before we left. I even asked the lady if they ex-rayed his feet and every where ,in case it had migrated. They did ,and it apparently has migrated all the way out.

I just can not believe this!

Has anyone actually had their cats spend 6 months in quarantine?
If so ,I would desperately like to hear how that was.

My only other option is for my kittie and me to go back to the states and do the whole damn thing over again. Which also means leaving my husband for another 6 months.

I am sooo devastated. :((

That's awful, smocha! And really, really weird.

I think the registered quarantine places aren't actually government run. I'm pulling this out of thin air, so don't take my word, but you might be able to find one closer to home so you can visit puss regularly. My dim memory is that they're very expensive, though.

Eh. So sorry.

I'm just devastated for you - I cannot even begin to imagine how I would have reacted in your place.  How small is the dang thing anyway?  I guess if it got into its digestive system and made its way out through a poo, you would have had to have the poo to find it again.

Somewhere online there is a list of approved quarantine facilities.  In your place I'd probably be looking at them and visiting them, getting prices, etc to decide what to do.  I too was separated from my DH b/c of our cats, and I don't think I could bear to do it again unless I had no other option.

From the Defra website: http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/quarantine/procedures/support-info/map.htm

Wow, this thread has really shocked me. I have heard of microchips migrating before, but only under the skin NEVER out of the body before. Has anyone else heard of this? I don't mean to question the people at the animal reception centre, but I just don't see anyway how a microchip could physically pass from under the skin into the digestive system??? Any medics or vets out there who can explain?

Forgive me if my question seems dumb, but was the reader used in the UK compatible with the US chip?  It just seems very odd that the chip could be read in the States, but not in the UK.

I hope the chip was properly activated in the U.S.

Thanks for your comments guys.

Mariposa ,

Here's a dumb question for you too. lol
When you say "activated" what do you mean?

As far as the reader, YES, I brought my own, AND they tried about 5 different ones as well. None of them read anything.

I am just guessing here, but you know how someone can get in a car wreck and 2 years later have glass come out of their skin? i am supposing the chip migrated like that.
When they inserted the chip , my cat struggled AND screamed like a person being murdered. So ,I think that the chip was never inserted as deeply as it was supposed to have been.

I will get to go see him this afternoon. I really NEED to hear from anyone who's cat has been through quarantine.

The latest is on here http://catsonthecounter.blogspot.com/

                                                     Thanks

Having looked at your blog, I think you are better off staying put and letting your kitty sit it out here.  I know that sucks, but it will most likely be equally traumatizing for him to go through all of the vet stuff again, plus two more flights.  Not to mention what you and your hubby will go through if you turn around and go back.  Just my opinion...
Sorry you had to go through this after you jumped through all the hoops to make sure this WOULDN'T happen.  Life is so unfair sometimes!   >:(
