It was either one of a group that she bought at the same time and thought, "wait, I have a notepad I still haven't given away to someone, that will do . . ." completely forgetting that she'd done it the year before, or she bought the pad in the charity shop that Abby gave it to--wouldn't that be kismet?  -if she actually received the EXACT same gift two years in a row.  It was destined to be hers!  ;D

We have competition each year for who can find the silliest bit of Christmas kitsch. We take photos of them on our mobile phones and send them to each other, winner to be decided on Boxing Day.  Last year's winner was a plastic Virgin Mary flash drive.

Exactly!  I bet Abby's MIL got hers from a thrift store!

Oh, she would NEVER stoop so low as to buy from a thrift store*!  Oh no, this was no doubt from her personal mecca - - The 99¢ Store.

And, before I start to sound any more shallow, I honestly don't care where she buys me gifts or even IF she buys me gifts.  She could draw me a picture of a rainbow and I'd be happy.  I'm just so very, very, very tired of her sending me things that involved absolutely no thought whatsoever.

If only!  No, I wound up with that after the following phone exchange between her and DH:

MIL: Did I ever give Abby a magnetic notepad with flowers on it?
DH: (noticing one on the fridge**) Well, there's one on the refrigerator, so I'm guessing you did.
MIL: Thank you.

Abby, I have to say, you are one of the funniest posters on here!

That notepad really takes the biscuit for worst ever!

I won a door prize at my company's Christmas potluck.  :D I was excited - I never win anything.

Then I opened it up and it was a CD (like the blank ones you buy in a pack) with "Precious" written on it.  ???

I thought that was really odd, but didn't say anything and kept it.

Then a few hours after the party there was an email sent around saying that the person who had organized the door prizes had borrowed a DVD with "Precious" written on it from a friend, and put it in a gift bag to keep it safe. The gift bag had accidentally been given out at the Christmas party.

I gave it back. I was going to keep the gift bag - it was cute and I could use it to wrap someone's present in - but the person who the DVD belonged to wanted it back to "protect the DVD."  ::)  :P

The only thing I can think of, is when I was a kid, around 13 yrs old or so, my grandmother gave me http://politicsoffthegrid.files.wordpress.com/2007/08/cootie.jpg

Mind you, this is for children between the ages of 3-6!

Wrinkle filling cream?   :(

Only my aunt would consider this an appropriate gift.

Yeah. That's pretty bad!  :-X Unless it was a nice expensive one you actually said you wanted but couldn't afford to buy for yourself.

I got a bra and knicker set off my MIL with the £3 Primark tag still attached.  :-\\\\ At least she bought the right size, though. She admitted to snooping while we were away at Thanksgiving. I shudder to think of what else she might have seen in our dresser!  :-X  :P I guess that would serve her right, though. LOL!

This is what annoys me so much.  My MIL specifically said she doesn't give gifts according to what other people wants...she gives what she wants to give.  ::)

Wow, I'm amazed she said that!  Although mine told DH the other day that she gave me a book of poetry (by a poet I'd never heard of nor, it turns out, like) because "Abby likes things I don't, so I thought she'd like that book."  Um, so her entire thought process was "Wow, this book sucks.  I know!  I'll give it to my daughter-in-law because she likes things that suck!" ???
