Vonage anyone on it? Quality?
« on: December 25, 2008, 09:37:28 PM »
Looking at Vonage as  a way to control costs related to calls back to USA.  They have an equipment purchase to get started but then only 6.99 pound PCM with unlimited calls to UK,USA and CANADA land lines and Mobiles.  Is any one on Vonage?  If you could please comment on the quality of the calling as it is an over internet service I'm concerned it may not be worth the effort due to degraded quality.  Thanks in advance for taking time to assist me.

We have had Vonage for over a year now, and the quality of calls is excellent.  As too is the service.
It has an answerphone service, and should you have a message, not only is it available on Vonage, but they also send you and e-mail with a WMA file attachment.  This means you can listen to the message without having to dial into Vonage.
Plus of course you can call mobile phones.  Not a problem here, but with the US system of chopping down your minutes with incoming calls, not a lot of help.
But, as it says, you can call anywhere in the world without burdensome costs.  We not only call the US regularly, but also Australia and New Zealand.
Conclusion, well worth the money, and much better than a lot of the Broadband phone packages that come as an integral part of some contracts.  We have Orange, but never use the phone, just Vonage.
Unfortunately, we still have to pay BT line rental.....such is life!

The U.K. Vonage £6.99 plan is rather restricted to be called "unlimited" though.  They have a "fair use" policy which limits the total of all calls (U.K. & North America) to 2000 minutes per month -- Only a little over an hour per day.  (Calls to other Vonage numbers are exempt.)

Scroll right down to the bottom of this page and click on the "Fair use policy" link:

I'm in the U.S., have Vonage and love it.  I really like the Vonage Access feature, which means my mother can call me (she lives an hour away and it's long-distance) via a Vonage Access number, and it's treated like she's made a local call.  She's 70 and retired, and we both like the convenience of being able to talk when, and however long, it suits us.

I'm a UK Vonage costomer.  I've had it for over a year now and I love it.  I addition to the Vonage package, we added a Virtual US number so my friends from home can call me and it's a local call for them.  Call quality has been excellent.  We had one call quality issue a couple of months after we signed up.  Every time we called to the Republic of Ireland, there was an echo on the line.  It was wierd; didn't happen on local calls or calls to the US.  We called them up and they had it fixed within 24 hours and we haven't had any problems since.  In my opinion, their customer service has been EXCELLENT.  I've got no complaints at all.

I'm in the US and we've had Vonage for about two years now. We found an access number so the side of the family in England can call us as a local call, and we get free calls there. We haven't had much problem with call quality and if there's a power outage, it transfers the calls to our cell phones. It has a lot of really cool features and it's so much less expensive for us than any other company even if we didn't call overseas.

I'm in the US and have had Vonage for a couple of years and like it. The only problem I have is I do a lot of downloading on my computer and if I don't pause my downloads while on the phone there is a lot of interference and static.

I love being able to check my messages through my email and it's nice being able to have a UK number too. Also, if I know I'm not going to be home but I'm expecting a call, I can set it where the calls ring to my mobile or to wherever I'll be and I can even set it so it rings both at home and on whatever number I choose at the same time. There are a lot of different features that are really cool.

The only real drawback was during Hurricane Ike and in the aftermath when we were without electricity it meant being without phone service as well. But, it's not something that's normally a problem.

I've got my Vonage set up to forward to my phone if my cable internet is out.  Anyone who called me during Hurricane Ike (and could get through at all) was forwarded to my cell.

I have mine set up that way too. Unfortunately my mobile battery was dying and I couldn't charge it for a few days, but most calls weren't getting through anyway..incoming or outgoing. A few calls did get through though, so yeah you're right, that's another good thing about Vonage. :)

Not a review on Vonage, but if you're looking for cheap calls to America check out Sky.  We pay £5 per month and get unlimited calls to landlines and mobiles phones in America (plus many other countries).  We're really happy with it.

I tried Vonage and disliked the service so Tim and I switched back to Skype.  IMHO, Skype is cheaper and you can get phones to hook up to it if you don't like the idea of sitting in front of your computer all day.
