Waiting for visa and theyre doing a background check?

I contacted my courier today because my date keeps being pushed back and they told me the consulate is needing more time to look at my application so they can do a "background check."

Long story short my original visa was denied but it was all a big mistake and blah blah blah so I can imagine thats what its to do with...Vicky wrote a letter on my behalf explaining the situation.

So what exactly does a "background check" entail?? I feel really nervous right now cuz I dont know where I stand. I just want to get back to work! 

They are cross referencing with the Home Office...who, as you know, are stupidly slow.  There is no reason for this to be refused, but it may take a wee bit longer.
