Border Control BEFORE Final Destination?
« on: December 31, 2008, 04:49:12 PM »
I often share stories from on here with my husband. Since we have been through it ourselves, we count our blessings that neither of us have been detained or refused entry to see the other.

I was just sharing with him another recent post on here and he made an interesting suggestion. He asked 'why not have border controls at the points of departure so people don't waste a flight only to find out they won't be granted entry?' Wouldn't that save some money in the long run...for the sake of then having to send people back?

Just wondering if this has ever been a thought of UKBA?

We found that they actually do this on the Canadian border... we checked in for our flights to Memphis and then found that we had to go through US immigration in Toronto (because many of the US airports are not international and have no immigration controls)... there was a 2-hour wait for immigration and our flight was boarding in 45 min!! It was a bit stressful, but we made it :).

They do it at the Eurostar terminals in Paris, Lille and Brussels, and used to do it at the airport in Bucharest, before Romania became EU.

Do either of you or anyone else know if the places that currently do it, or used to, are finding/have found it to be more/less effective? Wouldn't it essentially eliminate the need for people to be detained, as they would just refuse them and send them away?

I think it is a much better idea.  Better to be turned away at the airport of departure than the airport of arrival, especially after a long flight.

Thought; implies the capacity to think.  UKBA; the opposite.
Therefore, putting thought and UKBA together is a contradiction in terms.

If you're flying to America from Ireland you will go through US immigration prior to boarding your flight. You just have to go through customs when you get to America.
