« on: December 31, 2008, 10:37:43 PM »
Hello there, i have some time off in late march, and am thinking of a city break in the States, anyone got any suggestions please. The provisos being prefer east coast, maybe mid west, the temp (not too cold ), preferably not New York (been there,) and perhaps somewhere slightly different .

Hm. Charlotte, NC is an international airport. From there, you could go West into the (beautiful) mountains or East to the shore, or North or South to get someplace else entirely.

Atlanta is an international airport, too. Probably one in Florida. Up New England way, there's Boston.

Chicago?  Can't guarantee the weather will be very warm, but the snow should be gone by then.  Great museums, Great Lake (hee!), lots of fabulous architecture.  Not to mention all the fabulous food!

Agree with Atlanta since it's a fairly easy driving distance to Savannah or Charleston and either of those are great cities for a mini-break. Having been to both, I can't even choose one I loved most since they're beautiful both but in a different way.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

Depends on what sort of things you like to do on holiday - food, museums, history, nightlife, culture, nature, hiking, etc.?

How about DC?  Are the Cherry Blossoms out then?

Lots of stuff to see and do.   ;D

I liked DC!  What about Boston?  I've never been, but my dad says it's really amazing.  Although I'm not sure about the weather in late March.

Let us know what you finally decide.

DC! Why didn't I think of that? I went every year for a week when I was in my twenties (I could only last a week at a time before my feet gave out). Fabulous museums, and it's all free.

If you go around cherry blossom time, it'll be beautiful -- but stuffed full of tourists.

If not for the weather issue, I'd definitely have suggested somewhere in New England. But DC should be a tad less freezing!

I'll suggest Philadelphia.  Probably won't be *too* cold in March.  Warmer than Boston, anyway.

Loads of great restaurants.  South Philly's Italian Market as well as Italian restaurants, Chinatown, Vietnamese food, great veggie and vegan places, too!

Wonderful Old City area with loads of Revolutionary War era history and houses to see.  Great Art Museum and two science museums all within walking distance of each other.  Wonderful and funky art gallery area featuring up and coming local artists.  Lots of independant coffee places.

I could go on and on.  The great thing about Philadelphia is that there is so much jam-packed into a very walkable center city area.  And there are loads of buses to get you from one end to the other if your feet get tired.

I change my vote.  DC is a fabulous idea!

I just checked, and the National Cherry Blossom Festival is March 28-April12.  Perfect timing!

I would save New England states (New Hampshire, Mass, Vermont, etc) for Oct for the absolutely amazing fall colours.

DC is amazing.  So much to see and do, and not far way is historical Williamsburg, VA.

The south...Goergia and the grand historical homes is so amazing.  Not too mention the huge old trees that are amazing.  So are the accents and famous southern hospitality.

Pennsylvania and the countryside and the Amish way of life.

Just some food for thought  :)
