I adore Marmite!  and I like PB too.

Buttered whole wheat toast and marmite has to be one of favorite snacks of all time.

A common mistake when people try Marmite is laying it on too thick or trying it straight out of the jar.  It needs to be combined with other things.

Never thought putting it on a cheese sandwich, but I will try it!

Marmite and Blackcurrent are the flavours of the devil. They are what evil tastes like.  ICK.  They should be banned.

I love you Mindy!

100% agreed!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I've never had it with cheese either, but it sounds good!

I hate Ribena as well.  Its nasty!!!

I grew up on Ribena and LOVED it - but I tried it as adult and it wasn't very nice. I'm not sure if it's changed or if I have. However, Ocean Spray makes lovely a cranberry/blackcurrant drink that's sort of like Ribena for grownups! I used to drink it in the US as well, so blackcurrant isn't just a British thing!

Finally! A brit vs US thread I can weigh in on both sides equally: I hate them both. :)

When I've tried Marmite, I haven't liked it.  Oddly, years ago when I had Vegemite, I loved it.

I've not tried British peanut butter, but my husband claims it tastes different.  I like peanut butter, but I have to be in the mood for it or it has to be in baked goods.  I sort of burned out on the stuff in college when my food budget was around $20 a week.

A common mistake when people try Marmite is laying it on too thick or trying it straight out of the jar.  It needs to be combined with other things.

my method is as follows...

soft white bread, only lightly toasted so that it's still a bit chewy.

a knife-ful of REAL butter... no margarine!  Might need more than a knife-ful... spread it on very thickly, so that it melts, and remains in puddles.

A tiny wee dod of Marmite.... the size of an aspirin, or an M&M?   Scrape it very lightly over the toast and let it melt in with the butter.

Eat while toast is still warm...  ya beauty!  :)

DEFINITELY!  Blackcurrent is tolerable, but marmite. Blech!  Are you kidding me with this chary?   ;)  :P

Peanut butter all the way baby!

Come on now, I can't be the only person that loves them BOTH!

Now blackcurrant, however, is another story entirely, and it pretty much gives me the boak.  :-X
Ok, so I'm smug.

Marmite is nectar of the gods! I'm sticking to my guns!  ;D

Is it just blackcurrant-flavoured things you don't like, or blackcurrants themselves? I'm curious because they seem to flavour everything with grape in the US. I love grapes as a fruit, but grape-flavoured stuff tastes nothing like grapes to me, and is absolutely vile.

Well, I'm not so keen on summer fruits anyways, but I think my problem with blackcurrant is the same as yours with grape - the artificial flavour of blackcurrant is just blecch!

Mmmm, grape!

It's funny, my DH is in agreement about the blackcurrant v. grape thing... He says he didn't realise how crap blackcurrant is until he tasted grape in the States.
Ok, so I'm smug.

It does taste completely different, luckily they sell Skippy here.  I have adapted to many different foods but I cannot do british pb or Marmite.   On Marmite's website you choose love or hate it on the home page, I definitely fall into the hate it category, but my american dog loves it as well as my husband.

I just voted British/like both.   :)

I like mine on buttered toast. Heavy on the butter, with just the merest hint of Marmite.

That's the trick which can catch people out.  You have to spread Marmite very sparingly so you get just the right amount of "kick" from it.

It definitely is good!   Pre-heat your grill while the toast is in the toaster, then spread on your butter and Marmite (sparingly, remember!), add the cheese on top, then melt under the grill for a few minutes.
