So this thread should really be about "why is the US so puritanical about boobs?"  ;)

Vicky

Indeed. Remember all the ridiculous nonsense about Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction"?

from wikipedia:

Quote
Super Bowl XXXVIII, which was broadcast live on February 1, 2004 from Houston, Texas on the CBS television network in the United States, was noted for a controversial halftime show in which Janet Jackson's breast, clearly covered by a nipple shield, was exposed by Justin Timberlake for exactly 9/16 of a second, in what was later referred to as a "wardrobe malfunction".[1] The incident, sometimes referred to as Nippleshieldgate,[2][3] was widely discussed. Along with the rest of the halftime show, it led to an immediate crackdown and widespread debate on perceived indecency in broadcasting,[1] and resulted in a record $550,000 fine levied by the Federal Communications Commission against CBS,[4] as well as an increase of the FCC fine per indecency violation from $27,500 to $325,000.[5] Additionally, some commentators saw the halftime show as a sign of decreasing morality in the national culture.[6][7][8][9]

I mentioned about Janet Jackson's nipple slip some while ago, in which I compared US/UK reactions, but for no good reason that I could see, my post has been deleted.

The US (OSHA) are considering banning bras because they say they are booby traps.

Hang on, did I read that right? ;)

As long as no men are geeky enough to use the bra as an instant Princess Leia wig/hat......

As long as they're not trying to use it for the buns & then another to try to recreate the bikini scene its ok.  I think the day any man attempted the bikini scene he'd be banned from all manhood!

Even my brother (who has a long list of obscene costume history), nor any of his friends would DARE attempt the bikini in any of their tasteless Halloween party competitions (which my brother won last year going as a Hooters girl  :o - so NOT pretty!)!   ;)

I'm a Brit now in the US, and recently my 4-yr-old daughter was flipping through a copy of Waitrose Food Illustrated (a.k.a. The Best Magazine in the Freakin' World) my mum had sent me, when she came across an ad for pomegranate juice, in which a naked woman is sprawled on a bed covered in pomegranates.

She (my daughter) said "Wow! Look at all those pomegranates!!!!"

Heh heh.

But in general I find that a decade in the US has turned me a little more prudish, and I am always surprised (not necessarily shocked) when I go home for a visit and find myself watching a film in which the sex scenes and swearing have not been edited out. ("Bu-bu-bu-but they just showed boobs! Right there on national TV, where anyone could have seen them!!!")

We should send Trinny and Susannah over to the US so that they can "liberate" attitudes towards mammarys  ;D

Any excuse to get rid of them, the pervs..... :o

I think it's kind of interesting how there are so many posts that seem to generalize about attitudes about boobs in the US.  Especially the parts relating to how women dress in the office.  In my opinion, there are some distinct regional differences in the US when it comes to 'professional' dress.  I would also assume this is similar in the UK.  I just moved four months ago from the Los Angeles area where I grew up (Orange County, to be more specific), and I often find myself in offices in London and several other large European cities, and I can't say that I've really noticed any difference at all in the way European women and the women in Southern California dress in the office.  However, as I travelled throughout the US, there were definitely some differences in how women dressed in the office in the mid-west (for example) vs. either of the coasts.

There are definitely differences in what is 'allowed' to be shown on broadcast television in the US and the UK, however there's just as many boobs on cable in the US as there are in the UK.  And, go to just about any news stand within a 50 mile radius of where I grew up in California, and you'd find the same types of publications you find here.  So, I really didn't find there was much difference in attitudes or dress having moved here from Los Angeles.  However, I can recognize that Los Angeles, New York, Miami etc. are probably not going to be the same as Dayton, OH or Salt Lake City, UT.

I'm wondering if attitudes differ significantly from places like London to places more rural, or even to other major cities such as Birmingham, Manchester or Leeds, etc.?

I laughed so hard when I saw this post.

I think initially, when I was coming to the UK to visit, and I would see the page 3 girls, I was shocked and a bit appauled that it was just "out there" for all to see. While I still don't think it's tasteful to have it right in a newspaper (since I didn't buy it to see boobies), I'm not as bothered. I would think the OP is better off just leaving it and surely the 11-year-old will not have a problem with it, hehe.

She (my daughter) said "Wow! Look at all those pomegranates!!!!"

Hilarious!!

Which reminds me, it was about 6 mos. ago, but did anyone catch the advert for Orangina (sp?) that was on tv for a short amount of time -- the one with the naked animals being unusually sexual? I think it may have even been removed from UK adverts, but you can still get it on You Tube.

Well, I am from "liberal" New York City and I still find that what wold be acceptable office attire in the UK would get you stares and whispers in the US (even in New York City).

I don't think you can compare cable television (which is optional and I believe allows for parental control) with the BBC (which is meant to be viewed by everyone in the UK).

I also don't think you can compare the Sun - which is meant to be a newspaper - with the porn magazines that show pictures of boobs on the cover you might see on display in US bodegas.

It's not that you don't see the same amount of skin in both the US and the UK - it's that in the US it's considered naughty, while in the UK  it's considered mainstream.

I was shocked...I still am! Christmas morning I was reading the paper because my DH's father brought it over to me to read a story about a drunk pilot he thought was funny, and right with him standing over my shoulder, I turned the page and BAM. Boobies! My face went so so red   :o

It's also really awkward to me when there are naked people on the TV when I am with his parents. I just feel...weird. I'm used to in America, looking at the ratings on movies and such to know if there is nudity..and if I am watching with with my mother, I make sure to fast forward during those scenes to avoid them! And if we are watching TV that isnt on an HBO or showtime or skinimax, there really wont be anyone naked. But here..it can be 9pm and there they are, naked girls. No warning.

But I'm getting used to it..I have them, they've all seen a pair or two in their lives I'm sure so it's not a big deal. Just...takes some getting used to.  :P
