You guys have been great giving info and advice. What in your opinion would an American gain by living in Paris France half of the year(culturally, economically, dating, realestate investment ect ect), that could be superior to what I'd experience living in Manchester or London? What is the biggest difference in the culture, people and politics of France, compared to the English in your opinion? Which of the two countries is the most easy going layed back nation? And which is more welcoming to expats?

Thank you

The following are merely my opinions:

The American would gain culturally by being exposed to one of the most intelligent, elegant and stylish cultures in the world. In many respects French people make the English (and Americans) look like clumsy tongue tied idiots.

Economically, the euro has shown itself to be a particularly resilient currency during the recent economic crisis.

Dating: French girls are wonderful! However, they were not put on the earth for the delectation of visiting expatriates, and if you go over there with that attitude, you won't get very far. The fact that you actually asked this question makes your whole post seem decidedly trollish.

Real estate values: The official average price (Q2 2008) was € 6,580 per square metre for unoccupied old apartments in the City of Paris. It increased by 10.1% in comparison with the same period 2007.

France is definitely more laid back than England, and more interesting in every way. A big problem might be if you don't speak the (very beautiful and precise) language and/or can't be bothered to learn.

Hasn't this been done to death here http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=39765.0 ?

I can think if a few reasons why France is better...

1)  You don't seem to qualify for a visa for the UK
2)  Brits are..."so freaking anti-American and rude" Remember?

Besides, if we're dealing in stereotypes here, compared to the French view of Americans, the Brits are positively warm and fuzzy!

Most of the French people I know are pretty capable of telling the difference between on the one side, Hemingway, Elvis, Harley Davidsons and Chevrolets, and on the other hand, loudmouth rude tourists and George Bush.

I feel kind of stupid, as I realise I fed the troll.

I was about to jump in and answer, having lived in France for two years myself and my mother's mother was French.

Glad I didn't.

FWIW, the only problems I had with anti-Americanism in France came from people who weren't French themselves either, but immigrants (both legal and illegal) from former French colonies in N. Africa.

Also, if we are dealing in stereotypes - the French are "cheese eating surrender monkeys"!

Thank you everyone for taking the time to give your opinion about France.I'm trying to factor in every possible plus and minus to picking the UK vs France.Obviously the easy route would be to select Great Britain because of our shared language and similar traditions. On the other hand there is no truer fact that Americans(including me) have a distinct romantic opinion of life in France and especially Paris.Which makes this choice all the more difficult.Plus I don't think not knowing how to speak a language is reason enough to stop me from learning how to  master a different language. In any case thanks to all of you who have given your view point of France. I have to admit,France in the summer time sounds amazing!

On the other hand there is no truer fact that Americans(including me) have a distinct romantic opinion of life in France and especially Paris.Which makes this choice all the more difficult.

Especially when it comes to having a visa or legal reason to live there.  And that's long before you consider how much the rents are there.

Because I can assure you there's nothing romantic about being an American who doesn't speak very good French living in a council estate (yep, they've got 'em in and around Paris!) populated mostly by N. Africans.  ;)

Oh, yes, France in summer time is amazing - as in amazingly hot and humming with amazingly annoying American tourists.
