New to the UK! Moving questions...
« on: January 05, 2009, 08:56:11 PM »
Hi! New to the forum, and I am about to start school in a country I have never had the opportunity to visit before now. I will be in Leeds and was wondering if there was a place equivalent to Target where I could get bedding, school supplies, etc all in one stop. I know this is typically American of me but I planning on getting a large portion of supplies after I make the trek to the UK. Any tips are greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

ASDA is probably your best bet - it's Wal*Mart by another name.  If there's a Tesco Extra in Leeds, that would work, too.

Unfortunately there is no place like Target, but there are plenty of shops where you can get everything you need, places like Asda and Tesco have everything you might need and there are plenty of department stores.

Good luck!!!

Don't forget... if you're talking about university, it's not called 'school' here!
(Sorry, i dont know your age, so don't know if you are actually talking about university or if you're still at school!)

No one's suggesting Argos? The most British of shopping experiences? ;)
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

and "college" does not equal "university" either--in case you didn't know.

You won't have a problem finding things--as stated, Tesco Extra and ASDA are like Target.

Good luck!  What a fun adventure.

Argos is good but if you need it immediately tesco extra or asda are good bets. There is kind of a shopping mall in the Headrow that might be useful, but Leeds has loads of stuff in it's city centre.   :) (Hopefully those actually from Leeds will be along soon for a bit of extra help).

Must we be so picky about word usage???  Give this poor girl a chance to get into the country before you start blasting the way she talks.  Not only that - this is a US forum and the usage of her words are correct.   ::)

It's not really being picky...this is one thing where getting the word wrong may cause confusion.

Thats true, whenever I ask the girls next door how school is they laugh at me and say "I go to College" or "I'm in University now" Its funny cos I am foreign!

Wasn't trying to be rude at all, but just offering a hint at something which is different here and can cause confusion if the wrong terminology is used, but most Americans would not have any idea as it's such a given to say school or college in the States.  It took me a while to figure out what people meant when they would say things about going to college.
