should I bring my medical and dental records from the US?
« on: January 07, 2009, 04:29:57 AM »
Do you recommend obtaining a copy of US dental and medical records for review by UK doctors when I arrive?  Or are they not interested in our old medical records?

Thanks!

Drs records for sure.  Any doctor who doesn't want to know about your history is a doctor you should avoid.

If there is anything significant in your medical, dental or optical history then yes I would bring them, otherwise I wouldn't bother.

I agree with this. You will be asked for your medical history. Unless there is anything significant or you just don't remember yourself, no need for all the paperwork.  My GP's computer has my medical history based on what I've told them.

I only brought partial medical records from the last few years in the US.  But I wish I had brought them all because I was asked recently, due to pregnancy, about all the immunizations I have received over the years and if they were up to date.  I couldn't remember and had to ask my mum to dig around in her old paedatric files.

Don't bother with dental records. If you switch dentists here, your records don't follow you - your new dentist should take your information and do an exam and x-rays. Medical I'd only take if there was something really significant or unusual that will affect your current and/or future care....

If your immiunisation info is in paediatric records, then they are probably not up to date! Don't most last only about 10 years? I had to get my TB re-done before I went to Africa.

I went to my pedaetrician until I graduated Uni, so still relevant...(only just though).  The one in question was the Rubella one they ask about for pregnancy.  I think you only get that one as a kid and I asssumed I had but the midwife wanted me to check.  :)

And definitely fill up on any prescriptions you may be taking before you come over.  You should also bring any orginal prescription containers to the doctor as well.  I found that the Brand names could be different here, and one medication doesn't come in the same dosage, so I will have to take one pill and split another to simulate the same dosage.  Also, I was prescribed an "as needed" sleeping pill, but I didn't have the bottle with me and it was before I had med records, and the doctor said we only prescribe this for "mental" patients.

Bring your records.  Forget whether you have any kind of "history;" it's the future you may need them for.  If you develop a problem down the road, your history can be invaluable in solving medical mysteries.

Bring your medical records. No doubt at all.  My husband gets treated properly now that he has them versus when he didn't. His family history is now evident in them, and he has been tested for any family traits...which they wouldn't have bothered with unless he showed them in black and white.

He also suffers a form of PTSD and his records ensured that his treatment was dealt with accordingly...rather than going over old checks that he had previously been through already.
