me five.

also- if my doctor made me feel like a 'dirty whore', either we're doing something inapprioprate or i've chosen the wrong doctor.

I never found it that grueling in the US to get my pills either.

Personally, I liked having a smear every year.  It gave me reassurance that I didn't have cancer.  I know it is unlikely for cervical cancer to develop in less than three years, but still.

I only paid 10.00/mnth for my pills, if that, for my pills until I started making money.

Mine certainly didn't make me feel like a dirty whore, just that I'd get the *and he meant it all in a good way* that I should have been settling down and getting married having lots of babies- kind of like an Italian grandmother, except he was a Cuban father-figure   :)
He also did have some cultural things about sex, sexual partners and birth control, but he could respect my views as well. I just wanted to not get into an hour long discussion with him about why I didn't want to have babies right now and I was perfectly content not being married, etc.  I made that mistake the first appointment and he wouldn't let me live it down.
He was a good doctor though, an OB-GYN who much preferred the OB than the GYN! He thought everyone should be having babies! He loved delivering babies!
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

Of course there are good reasons for asking about sexual partners, and here I've been asked if I needed condoms or anything. But in southwest Ohio, there were definitely 'looks' and tuts, more from pharmacists than doctors, about getting the pill, even though at the time I was only taking it for period pain. I always felt I had to justify myself to them.

Nobody said you did.  Somebody else said that and people responded to her:

The fantastic and modern attitude towards birth control of the UK is just one of many reasons why I love it here! It's free and you don't get treated like you're a dirty whore = huzzah!

Okay.

I completely missed that line in the post...and I was sitting here trying to figure out why everyone was saying stuff about being one for getting BC!

Am I the only one who thinks that as a visitor you should have had to at least had to pay for your pills?? Don't get me wrong, I'm not faulting the OP for this (and I'm very happy you were able to get your pills), I'm faulting the NHS. We're constantly hearing how much trouble the NHS is in, then we hear a story about how someone who should have legitimately paid for her prescription (and seemed to be willing to) didn't have to?? It makes no sense and well, it ticks me off a little bit!

What she said.

I'm afraid I work for a PCT that is really struggling to provide the population with what it needs within the sum that the DofH give us. My opinion of what should be available to visitors has changed DRASTICALLY since I've started working on the inside....  :-\\\\

My housemate is a nurse for the NHS, so the current state of the NHS is constantly on the radar here. She said a visitor came in to have her baby one evening and they told her she would have to pay for this because she is not eligible for the NHS. I was actually impressed they did this! She told them fine, she'd go to London where she could have her baby for free.  :-\\\\

But does the NHS have a routine system in place for billing patients, and for collecting & processing payment?

 ???
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...
