taking pets back to the US?
« on: January 12, 2009, 10:28:25 AM »
Has anyone taken their cats back to the States after going through the PETS scheme to get them to the UK?  We are moving back, but can't find any info on how or what is needed to take them back.  Or even if anyone has done this for a visit or vacation, what documentation did you need since they originate from the States??  Any info anyone can give would be much appreciated!

I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

I just looked into this for our 2 dogs (cocker spaniels) that we brought here with us a few years ago under PETS.  I couldn't find much on the web but I called American Airlines and also KLM and both just told me the cost and the weather restrictions.  On AA website it just talks about them needed a letter to travel if it is too cold and it might also recommend a rabis injection and maybe a fit to fly letter no older than 10 days.  Also I was told the cost for mine would be $150 each on American and 150 euros on KLM is they flew as excess baggage and the cost for them to fly alone was the expensive cargo rate.  I was also reminded they could not return with either airline.  I haven't booked anything yet but it seems way more easier than bringing them this way.

I think that is why I am really confused on how to take the cats back!  It seems almost too easy to take them back to the States.  We are hoping to move within the next month and really have no clue yet!  We are coming back in April for a wedding, so it would be fine to wait until then, but we just want to get it figured out!  Maybe a phone call to the vet might be the best idea and see if they happen to have an experience with it.
Thanks for the replies, any more info or suggestions are definitely welcome!

I think it's easier bringing them to the US because the UK is classified as rabies-free.  You don't need certification with that, from what I read.

yeah I agree.  I know what you mean about it being too good to be true but I do think its really that easy and especially because its from a rabies free area.  I think it was just way harder to bring them this way.  I'll be interested to know how things turn out.
