« on: June 08, 2004, 12:22:14 PM »
This will be the first time I've taken a telephone to the U.K, anyone know if it's gonna work? I understand the connection is different and I'll need an adapter but what about the phone itself......Puzzle for the day............is a phone a phone no matter which country  ;D

David told me not to bring my phone over (I had a digital one) just because he thought digital phones worked on some kind of different frequency over here or something... I just took his word for it and bought a new one over here. Is your digital? If not I don't think it would be a problem. If it is, it may *still* not be a problem because David may have been talking complete rubbish. He's been known to do so in the past. :D
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

I think David's right - it's the frequency that cordless or digital phones work on that is different.

Plus, if it's cordless, that means it has to plug into the mains as well, so you need an adapter for that.

Phones are relatively cheap - seems better to just buy one here and know it's going to work!  ;)

It may also be to do with the sort of dialling tones they use to communicate with the exchange.  But yes, phones are not expensive.  Have a look at Argos!

PS. It's great to hear you're coming over Celtic - were you keeping it quiet, or did I just not notice an announcement?  I hope you'll not confine yourself just to Guinness when you're here - some mighty fine other beers to try out, some of which may be new since your last visit!

Yeah phones arent expensive and you kind of need one. Probably best to just get one here. That way you know it'll work. On the other hand, if youre currious like I am - bring it and see what happens! :)

Thanks for that, maybe I'll just stash the few I have here in my household stuff and if they work , they work. Nah Howard, was'nt keeping it quiet but this is the first time I've hopped the pond to live like a responsible adult :P instead of just packing up a duffel bag like a long haired leaping gnome......it's so much easier when you're young and don't even think about whether phones work or not 8)

What about antique US phone that plug into a wall, will they work over there with an adapter?  My husband has a few candlestick phones (late 50s models) he wants to take with, but hopes they won't just be decorations when we get there.
