That sounds as revolting as Marmite!!  Which is not cheap in the US.
I'm with you on that. I treated myself to a bottle a few years ago 'cause it was English and expensive. I think I threw it away after tasting it a few times. Tastes change. I don't like English sodas any more either. I love English apple juice though. Nothing tastes like it in the US.

Vicky,
Do you ever make Bovril sandwiches? They are cheap. Banana sandwiches are one of my favorites mainly because I can't prefer not to eat bananas straight.

I can't eat Bovril, it's not veggie, and I need something more substantial in my lunchtime sandwich.  I haven't had banana sandwiches since I was a kid, I used to love them!  We don't tend to buy bananas as I forget about them and they go bad - another waste of money.

My pet hate is throwing food, so we often bring leftovers to work for lunch.

Hubby & I used to shop at Morrisons and we were spending about £45 a week for the 2 of us. Now we're buying from Farm Foods and our local fruit and veg shop and we're only spending £18-£20 per week.

We used eBay and the weekly Car Boot sales for DD's clothes up until now, we broke down and went to Primark and got her 9 mo -18 mo wardrobe there, oh and Adams Kids has awesome sales as well *if you can find one in your area that hasn't closed.

You only spend £20/week on food for two people!?!?! What are you eating?

We spend about £75/week for two people! :(

We probably spend about the same (not including beer, of course).

I'm probably being too nosey, but can you give me an idea of what type of meals you have?

DH and I don't buy meat and don't drink, so I can't understand why we spend so much!

You're not the only one Yael. I could never get our food bill for 2 lower than £60 per week and now, with 2 kids, it's even more.

There are tons of threads on this in the food forum, have a look in there, it might give you some ideas.  I've posted quite a bit in there.

I don't buy meat either.

Yeah, I've seen the threads. Still couldn't do it. There are some things we just can't eat (frozen mince, tinned spaghetti hoops, etc). Those were some of the suggestions, but certainly not all. I also used to be a crusader for organic/free range but even giving all that up, we still spent a lot more than £20 per week for 2.

we spend £20ish a week as well...with incidental purchases, probably no more than £25/week for the two of us at the minute.

Not as much as we'd like.  We eat a lot of root vegetables (esp potatoes and carrots), and last week we had some spinach in the fridge.  We've got some apples and bananas in the kitchen right now as well, doing double duty as snacks and dessert for me (I'm on a dairy-free diet due to lactose intolerance).

See, that's some of it. We eat lots of fresh fruit and veg. My son is going to turn into a fruit bowl, I swear. But regardless, I know even people like Vicky (vegetarian) who don't buy meat were still spending a heckuva lot less than us.

We don't eat tons of fresh fruit and veg and still spend a lot! We shop at Asda or Tesco as well.

Uggh!!

Yeah, we hardly ever buy meat.  We're not veggie, but our diet is probably >50% vegetarian in practice!  We also eat a lot of pasta and eggs..oh, and we don't buy fruit juices or soda. Our diet is probably the definition of cheap and cheerful! :)  But it's still a heck of a lot better (and less expensive!) than our uni days when we weren't cooking and having frozen dinners at every meal..not having a microwave when we moved cut that right out.
