I think if anything is horrific to eat in the morning it's an English Breakfast.

And you call yourself British!

I recall years ago reading a John Grisham book and he mentioned "biscuits and gravy" and I really couldn't fathom what it would be as I knew biscuits here were cookies there, so I had to ask an American friend and I still couldn't work it out until i went over there and she made some and I said "Oh....they are like scones" I liked them at Popeyes chicken etc but the thing with "gravy" (which to us isn't gravy but sauce!) does seem very strange!

Besides pancakes and eggs and bacon

Biscuits and gravy is one of DH's favorite meal.

He only wishes we could get some Jimmy Deans sausage!

But I fix it with streaky bacon for the fat to make the gravy with..and lots of black pepper.. ;D

So J just saw something on tv with an American talking about biscuits and gravy and he calls me up and goes, "Ewwww!!! Why do American's eat biscuits and gravy?" and I was like, "Hahaha, just a thread on UKY today about that. Its not what you think".  And he goes, "Well what it is it then?" and so I tell him, and he goes, "Oh, well I'm not sure about that, but it does sound a lot better than McVities and Oxo!"

We always used to do them for dinner at our house.  I don't know why.  Everyone else does them as a breakfast item.  I do love them now and then though.  It's been a little bit since I made them here.  I'll have to do it again.  Luckily, DH likes them a lot too.

Our family tradition was to fill up with biscuits and gravy and then to have a biscuit or two with raspberry jam and butter for dessert.

I'm not a gravy fan at all (not that American kind, anyway), but I do loooooove freshly baked warm biscuits with honey! YUM!

That sounds...really...geez, dude.

Scones without cheese or fruit are as near as dammit to Bisquik-style biscuits, IMO. But I think you're on your own with the gravy.

So...grease (butter will do, but the remains of fried chicken are my favorite) in a skillet. Stir with wooden spoon. Add a couple of tablespoons of plain flour. Stir. Stir, stir. Don't want it to burn. Add in a little salt and pepper. Keep stirring until the flour is a little browned. Add in, say, half a cup of milk (or more...I like my gravy pretty solid) all at once. Keep stirring until it bubbles up and reaches the texture you like.

As long as you don't walk away and let it burn, it's pretty easy.

Don't forget the sausage meat!

Yeah, it's basically bechamel with drippings instead of butter. Easy!

It's like a cloud has been lifted from my eyes...

That recipe is basic white sauce!  Gravy is white sauce!  So, you guys eat scones with white sauce?  Honestly, I have been wondering this for years!!!

That's a cream gravy, which is what we mean by biscuits and gravy. A beef gravy is different, and I've never made one.

I'd never thought of it that way, but yeah, I guess we do! I've also had really good vegetarian biscuits and gravy too. You should try it. ;)

Edited to add: Beef gravy on biscuits? No thanks! That belongs on mashed potatoes only.

Beef gravy is great on biscuits...  as is chicken gravy, etc... or jam...or butter and honey... or ham and red eye gravy... or runny fried eggs...mmmmmm biscuits!

J has requested sausage and biscuits now since we were talking about it last night.  Sounds like I know what I am making this weekend!

LOL!   ;D  DH and I had this argument for weeks after he tried it.  He says "it's not gravy, it's sauce," I say "it's gravy if you are from Texas," he says "I don't care where you are from, it's sauce.  Gravy is brown."  and so on and so on.  He didn't care for it much.  He also had cream gravy on chicken fried steak, which he thought was a bit better than on biscuits, but once he cut into the steak, he wanted to know why his "chicken" was brown and chewy...  :P

Well, cream sauce crammed with sausagemeat and a heaping spoonful of black pepper.  I've never thought of it that way.  But I wouldn't say that a biscuit is really comparable to a scone.  Biscuits often have buttermilk in them, and are consequently usually lighter, with a feathery texture.  I always find scones to be fairly stodgy.  Maybe just the way I like them?   ;)

DH loves biscuits and gravy.  I mentioned this discussion and he's asked me to make them after I go shopping again.  I don't think it's any stranger than the British propensity for piling non-spready things on toast, personally (scrambled eggs on toast, beans on toast, spaghetti on toast...).

I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.
