But I wouldn't say that a biscuit is really comparable to a scone.  Biscuits often have buttermilk in them, and are consequently usually lighter, with a feathery texture.  I always find scones to be fairly stodgy.  Maybe just the way I like them?   ;)

My scone recipe uses buttermilk!  :)

Really?  Then I stand corrected.  I haven't allowed for the diversity of scones.  Mine takes heavy cream instead.  :-[
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

Cream goes on a scone, not in one.

Damn, I have to make scones now!

The store-bought scones I have had were much stodgier than a biscuit, and I was a bit disappointed.  But the homemade cheese ones in the canteen at work are just like cheddar biscuits, and a colleague brought some in that his wife made and they were also really light and feathery like a biscuit with raisins.  I've never made them (and now that I am on a diet, it will probably be a while before I even eat one again!) but it must be a similar method to making biscuits.  Hmph, I suck at baking, anyway!   :P

You so did not just say that, woman.  Don't knock it until you've tried it...   :P  People who eat my scones always immediately demand the recipe!!

If we're talking about clotted cream, then only on top.  I looooove clotted cream.

mmmm . . . clotted cream . . . Damn UK-Yankee and it's ability to make me start craving random things!!!  >:( ;D

I tend to describe biscuits as being a more savory scone, whereas here they tend to be more sweetened.  Just as there are varieties in the States (buttermilk vs. plain baking powder) there are varieties here.  I've known people who use buttermilk for theirs and others who don't.

Hadn't thought of describing the gravy as a cream sauce (with the sausage and pepper twist) though.  It hadn't even crossed my mind that the word gravy would bring up a totally different image, even though I've noticed that gravy here tends to be quite different.  Can't say I'd want to put bisto on biscuits either :)

Mine's a sort of modified version of Delia's recipe. I also add bicarb ... which makes them extra fluffy!

Say 'Gravy' to the majority of Brits (myself included) and this is what they will imagine:

When I went to the US for the first time, the idea of eating 'biscuits and gravy' seemed really gross... because I was imagining Bisto-style gravy with it :P.

That's what DH was expecting.  When I handed him the plate he said "What's this?"  But he actually thinks Bisto gravy would be better on biscuits than cream sauce! That's blasphemy to a Texan, we would eat cream gravy on almost anything!  Though I do like brown gravy with chipped beef on toast.  Hmmm... haven't thought of that in a while.... might have to conjure that up sometime soon...  ;)

I think it would be better, too! Sort of like gravy and Yorkshire pudding? Not exactly, but the concept of a savoury doughy thing and gravy is the same.

My DH must be a misplaced Texan  ;)  I think he'd eat nearly anything, as long as it was covered in sausage/country gravy.  It's a good thing I never make chicken fried steak - he'd have a heart condition and probably die from pleasure overload in no time!

Oh man, reading this thread has made me crave my mom's fried pork chops. She always makes fried potatoes and biscuits and gravy when she fries pork chops. Nothing like a little heart attack on a plate!
