Try Emirates Air - what a great airline.  They have recently started flying to the US.  We flew Emirates to Africa a few years ago and they were the most comfortable airline we have ever flown.  We had to keep looking around to make sure we were still in coach through the whole flight.  We had a screen in front of every seat with our own choices - over 150 channels and movies on demand to start/stop at any time.  We got a menu to chose our own meals from a couple of choices.  Real silverware, real salt and pepper shakers, real napkins and real food!!  The flight attendants really enjoyed their job and doing what they could to make us feel welcomed and comfortable throughout the flight.  Most flights go into Dubai - so make plans to spend a couple of hours there - it's a fantastic airport with lots of shopping opportunities.  And the best part, the price was cheaper for us to fly out of Birmingham (where we lived) than to drive/train, etc...to London and then fly out from one of those mega airports!

I don't fly one particular airline, I generally just go with which ever one offers me the best fare and a reasonable itinerary. I have flown BMI, Continental, United, American and NWA for transatlantic flights. BMI was great for service and comfort, and they even give you a menu and use real cutlery in coach class. Bonus points for that. But of all of the airlines I've tried, I prefer NWA when making a long flight. My flight with them is non-stop, the flight attendants have always been pleasant, the planes comfy and clean and I like their video systems the best.  I haven't flown with them since they merged with Delta but will be this spring. Hopefully I will be as pleased as I was before the merger.

The merger won't be totally completed till the end of this year (earliest) so hopefully things for at least this year will remain the same as I have always enjoyed Northwest, my flight back from the UK this past Dec. had the friendliest and rather funny flight attendants, the flight was actually a lot of fun.

We flew Continental last time we went to the US, and it was mostly uneventful. The only thing that really stuck out in my mind was the fact that our flight attendant had the hugest biceps I'd ever seen. I wasn't going to mention it to my boyfriend, in case he thought it was weird, but then he turned to me and exclaimed 'Look at that guy's guns!' (Anchorman reference.) LOL.

The best experience I've had in recent years was with Air France.  We had enough air miles for an upgrade for me so I got to sit in the posh bit!!  Very comfortable.  The food and service were superb.  The only drawback was that a family with a hyperactive kid were sitting across from me.  That kid did nothing but run around and jump up and down on the seats and the attendants did nothing  >:(

We've only flown British Airways in the past ten years (with the exception of Icelandic Air once - never again!) and have never had a problem with BA. I'd highly recommend them to anyone. No lost luggage, no major delays, no flight cancellations, nice enough staff (especially with our 2 kids), etc.

We (luckily) fly direct to the UK, so I don't know what a layover would be like with them, though.

I loved BA the time I flew them. It was RT to Paris through London. I got to choose a long layover in London (22 hrs!) on the way home and chose that so I could go into London for the first time. I had a whirlwind 8 hr tour around London! They delayed my flight in from the US and I missed my connection to Paris and I almost missed the Paul McCartney concert I was going to the night I arrived (about 8 hours late arriving to Paris). I had been upgraded on the flight though. It was luxurious! Great planes/service...

Delta is my least favorite (great since i live in Atlanta, their hub!) which I flew last summer. Crap food, ok service, old plane. The monitor for the movie was right next to me seat so I couldn't even watch it bc the other one was too far away (like a 12 inch tv!)

United is nice, but I hate their 767s and going through Chicago. LONG flight when you're coming home esp. since it's farther west than Atl. US Air are ok. I've flown NW and Continental ages ago, but wasn't impressed. This was way before 911 (mid 90s) so who knows what they are like now.

Air France are my favorite- even in the back of the plane, you get great food, drinks, real silverware, menus, etc.... Very professional staff, etc. And I love airbuses!

I'll likely be taking Aer Lingus this summer for the first time. Anyone have any feedback about them?

Not great, but nice and cheap.  Reasonable, I think, given the price.  I've flown with them a couple of times and never had any problems with delays or missed connections.  Once really nice thing about them is that they have an agreement with their partner airlines--these are the ones that actually handle the transatlantic flight, Aer Lingus just does Europe-- so that even though the flight from the US and the flight from Dublin are technically separate, you don't have to pay extra for checking a bag, as you would if you were just on a short haul flight between RI and UK.

Ok. I guess i can't complain since they are about $400 cheaper than the rest right now. So Aer Lingus won't actually do the longhaul part? Is that what I'm understanding?

Actually, now that I think on it, it may not always be true.  The last time I flew with Aer Lingus, I had AA acting as their partner from the US to Dublin, then Aer Lingus proper for Dublin to London, but now I remember that the first time I went on AL, it was with them all the way . . . .  I can't completely remember now.  Curse my aging brain!

Ok. It was showing on travelocity that the US part (to Chicago or something) was a ptnr airline and then CHI-DUB was Aer Lingus.... I thought maybe I was misreading it...
