Delta is my least favorite (great since i live in Atlanta, their hub!) which I flew last summer. Crap food, ok service, old plane. The monitor for the movie was right next to me seat so I couldn't even watch it bc the other one was too far away (like a 12 inch tv!)

You don't happen to remember what row you were in, do you?  I am trying to guess if my seat is one of those dreaded seats in which you can't see the darn TV.  I have been so spoiled by NWA and their ever seat has it's own TV.

It also generally depends on what size aircraft you're on as to whether you get individual TVs - with all the flying I did last year, I've found that for several airlines (AA, Delta, United etc.), if you are flying on a 777 plane, you will usually have an individual TV, but most 767s and smaller planes only have the screens in the ceiling/mounted on the partitions (with the exception of one random Delta flight between Salt Lake City and Sacramento which had individual screens on a 767 (it was a pretty new plane)).

I have to be the dissenter here...I like American Airlines and try to fly them whenever possible.  My standard route is LHR to BOS.  Somethings that make me AA the right airline for me:

It's a direct flight
They are usually the cheapest
I fly alone a lot or with my husband - no kids to complicate things
We both have Gold status - so things like luggage restrictions don't usually affect us and we get pre boarded and in the US have special security lines and you can check in at the business class desks, and we always get preferential seats at the front of economy
They have a good Frequent flyer programme.  You earn the actual mileage of the flight, even if you are in discounted economy.  BA by comparison you earn a fraction of the actual miles, so it takes much longer to get an award ticket
I don't expect much from airline food on any airline
I like the seat configurations, on their 777 or 767's there are usually two seats by the window and then a middle section of either 3 or 5 seats.  I like that when DH and I fly together, we have a little row to ourselves  It helps only having to disturb my DH when I go to the loo.

Sure I have had flight attendants that aren't that friendly on AA, but you know what I can hear the crap that other passengers put them through and I sympathise.  At the end of the day, I paid a reasonably cheap amount (less than £400) to fly halfway across the world.  I don't expect them to kiss my butt and treat me like a queen.  If you expect that you should really be paying for business class.  It's lurvely up there!!

I have flown Virgin and BA too and I think they are good too.  The only real benefit AA has over the others is their Airmiles programme.  It's much easier to accumulate enough miles for a free ticket on AA than BA.

If you know what kind of plane you're flying on (it might be on your itinerary), you might be able to see a layout of the plane's interior here:

I couldn't find info on how to order special meals on different carriers.  Or did I just miss it?

I book exclusively through expedia and I just have mine set as a preference and I have always gotten my special meal. But you may just have to call the reservations number for whichever airline you're using.

We signed up for AA membership to collect miles
as well as signed up to the BA executive club and it lets you set your preferences like where you like to sit and what kind of meals you want

so when we book we always but our membership number in and it will recognize our preferences.

I am sure you could sign up for any airlines membership club that you have booked with and set your preferences and go back in and put your locator in and it will bring up your flight and then show your meals as well...

have I confused you?? I think I might have confused myself..lol

NWA also gives you miles for miles, actually if fly under 500 miles they still give you 500 miles, it makes it easy to get into their elite programs.

Well for me .. nothing flies direct from Edinburgh to Boston anyway.. soooooo
While i prefer Virgin Atlantic I usually end up taking KLM as it usually comes down to cost first then comfort/amenities. Saying that . I've had pretty good experiences with KLM.

hey that's the route i'm always flying too!!!  i usually go with whatever airline is cheaper - usually klm and continental.  i've found them to both be about the same.  nothing amazing, but fine for me.  i've always wanted to try virgin, but never find a decent price with them.

I'll likely be taking Aer Lingus this summer for the first time. Anyone have any feedback about them?

I actually flew Aer Lingus on my lastflight from Boston to Edinburgh and really enjoyed it.  It felt soooo much faster stopping in dublin rather than going out of the way and stopping in new york or amsterdam, etc.  i'll definitely fly with them again if i get the chance.

Ooh! Great to hear! I booked my flight with them yesterday. I'll be flying through Chicago first. I am excited! Thanks for the info.

I like Virgin and we fly them exclusively whenever we can. Economy mostly, or Prem Ec when we can splurge. We got upgraded to Upper Class once though...*passes out in bliss*

I used to fly AA lots and had gold status with them, but the last two flights I took on them were so awful in every way, I just stopped.

The one time we flew BA in the past two years, it was nice. I don't remember the meal but I remember being sick and dehydrated the whole flight and the flight attendant noticed and would drop off a bottle of water or offer me a cup of tea every time she walked by. I thought that was sweet.

My parents fly KLM twice a year and they're happy.

As to others, the last time I flew a US airline (besides AA) was four years ago on United. I am horribly scared of flying and sitting by the window just makes it worse, so I always request either an isle seat or a seat in the middle section. Anyone, on a LHR/NY flight, the check-in agent I guess tried to do me a favor and moved me to a window seat without me noticing. When I saw, I went to the gate agent and explained that I was gonna have a really rough flight if I had to sit by the window and if she could please move me. They didn't have any isle seats in economy left, so she upgraded me to business class instead. Middle section too -- although for business I'd have made an exception to my no-window-seat rule. ;)

And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"
