I am just bumping this, as it is only 7 weeks away and we are in a planning stage.  We've lots of bars and a few other things to do, but would still welcome restaurant tips...especially for pizza and Mexican, and ideally not chains.

Lou Malnati's pizza.  Really.  Best pizza I have ever, ever had, including at other Chicago deep-dish restaurants.  But you have to get the butter crust.

According to slice, lou malnati is possibly the son of the guy who invented deep dish pizza. There is some controversy on that score, but his dad is a pretty good candidate.

And now I would like to hijack this thread for a minute to relate my tale of woe. My sister lives in Chicago. But whenever I go to visit, she constantly harps on me needing to "lose a few" as she puts it. Thus, when in Chicago, all I ever get to eat is rabbit food. So if you can believe it, after FOUR visits to the birthplace of one of the most delicious things known to man (I assume,) I've never even got close enough to SMELL a pizza, much less actually taste one.  :\\\'(

Maybe someday.

That's shocking.  Dan and I both need to 'lose a few'....and I would guess that we shall return from our honeymoon needing to lose a lot!

I am shocked at the tragedy and injustice of this.  Let me know the next time you're in Chicago, and I will fly over expressly to take you to Lou Malnati's.

Seriously, Mort, that is just not right.  I have half a mind to ship you a pizza from the airport when I'm there next.

Vicky - Lou Malnati's is very good pizza.  For Mexican, Rick Bayless makes very good upscale Mexican at his restaurants Frontera Grill and Topolobampo.  If you have a mode of transport or just spring for a cab, I love the guacamole and margaritas at Adobo Grill.  A nice French/Vietnamese restaurant is Le Colonial.

Also, if you want to be just a bit like President and Mrs Obama, make a reservation at Spiaggia for some wonderful views of Michigan Avenue and the lake.  Other nicer restaurants that were my faves are

- Bin 36, upscale wine bar with great food and ambience (good brunch as well)
- Blackbird, a bit abstract but a great chef (right down the street from my old flat!)
- Everest, an amazing restaurant in the Chicago Stock Exchange building with brilliant views

I still remember when they first opened it!  We were all skeptical but it's really good.

A nice French/Vietnamese restaurant is Le Colonial.

That reminds me...

A fantastic French/Thai fusion place is a place called the "Red Lantern".  Amazing place...

As for Lou Malnatis...I honestly have never like their pizza, nor do I think they have the best deep dish in Chicago.  But that is neither here nor there, as long as you have a proper deep dish in Chicago you can't go wrong.
