veggie burgers
« on: January 16, 2009, 01:20:47 PM »
I used to eat the Morningstar Farms or Boca products in the states, but haven't tried any veggie burgers here.  Are there any that you would recommend that might be comparable to those?  Can you find the Gardenburger riblets or anything like that here in UK?  Thanks!

I've had lovely spicy black bean burgers but, of course, I can't remember what make they were. I have a feeling they were just Tesco or Morrison brand. I think there are probably Boca-type things out there, but I'm not a big fan of meat substitutey stuff, so haven't really noticed. I'm sure others will be able to help you out.

I haven't been able to find anything like Gardenburgers here.  I loved the mushroom ones, but then I can't really get anywhere other than Tesco so ymmv

Boca's your basic soyburger.  Quorn does one that is mycoprotein, but tastes similar, or Sainsbury's (I would think most supermarkets actually) do their own brand of soyburger.  Most supermarkets will carry frozen veggie burgers like Grassingtons (with broccoli, carrots, peppers, and beans in them) or a bean-type patty.  Quorn also does a nice breaded "chicken" burger.  I like veggie burgers better than meat ones personally, and I'm not a vegetarian.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

Cool... I will take a look at Sainsbury's and see what they have.  I like black bean burgers the most, but soy is ok, too.  That breaded "chicken" patty sounds good, I used to eat the Morningstar Farms chicken patties and nuggets all the time in the states.  Thanks for your feedback!

I love the nut burgers they sell at the Morrison's we sometimes go to (they might be elsewhere as well).  Very nice, and I think they are vegan and not just vegetarian.  I can't remember the brand name, but it's worth a look in your shop's freezer case.

Quorn also do a fake rib thing.  It's not as good as Morningstar's version, but it's okay.  The only place I've found it was at Farmfoods.

There is a long thread somewhere on veggie foods, but off the top of my head Sainbury's do nice ones, also check the Kosher section of any supermarket for Tivall burgers and schitzels.

If you liked Morningstars fake chicken, you'll love quorn! It's soooooo much better (and i like the morningstar ones!) Try their peppercorn "steak" patties, too. Yum yum yum! One of the things I'm looking forward to eating this summer when I'm in London! LOL

FYI, if you're vegan, Quorn contains egg.

My personal favourite is GoodLife Foods Chipotle Bean Burgers. But they're very veg. heavy and get their texture from beans rather than tofu, so they're not at all like Boca burgers. I personally found Boca burgers way to meat-like in texture so I tend to prefer the ones with more veg. bits.

We also had M&S vegetable crisp cakes last night and they were super good. But again, not burger like - more crumbly....

Sainsbury's also do a few varieties of veggie burgers that are really nice. (I'm not a veggie, but Adam is, so we try all sorts of things.)

One is a Morroccan style burger, which is basically a big falafel. Very yummy. The other we like is a Thai style one, which isn't very burger-y, but is very nice with a garlic sauce and some rice.
Another shameless promotion for www.mclevey.com, the best place on the internet to buy art.

I disagree with this. I liked Morningstar 'chicken' patties, but I find Quorn to be vile. I've tried it different ways and I just can't like it.

The quorn chicken fillets are a necessity or me. They come 6 in a bag, keep in the freezer, and i use one almost every day in all kinds of different things i eat. I liked morningstar grillers at home and quorn veggie burgers are the most similar. Cauldron sausages are really good. I like those on a roll with jam. I miss good veggie dogs (the ones here taste different, are small, and for some reason very oily), and more importantly good hot dog buns. I like the garlic kievs at all of the supermarkets. For thanksgiving and christmas i get the quorn family roast which is really good. Tesco used to have veggie burritos which were my absolute favorite thing- but then there were no more. :-[

That sounds fantastic!! We don't often make it to Sainsbury's but next time I'll look out for the Moroccan burger!  :)
