contact lenses
« on: January 18, 2009, 12:23:31 AM »
I'm going to be running out of my Focus Dailies soon and I really want to switch brands of contacts anyhoo.  In addition to the expense, they have been the least comfortable lenses I've ever worn.

Any recommendations on the least expensive route for getting a new prescription and lenses?

I know this has been covered, but me and the new search function aren't getting along too well.

I think Specsavers often have pretty good deals on eye test/glasses/contacts, so you could try them (there's one in Broadmead - Union Street, opposite The Mall Galleries). Also, you can sometimes get some good deals with Boots as well (if you have a Boots Advantage card and join up to the free Health Club, you get a voucher for a free eye test in the mail - but it can take a couple of weeks or more for it to come through, so perhaps not ideal if you need to book a test very soon).

It's worth popping into a few different opticians to shop around for the best deals and if you already have a contacts prescription and know which lenses you need, you can usually also order contacts online through the opticians' websites :).

I go to my local opticians. I pay them £20 a month and I get one pair of disposables for the month and all my saline included.

If you still have your box from your contacts (with your prescription on the side), you CAN have new boxes sent to you via 1-800-CONTACTS. This is how I have done it with my weekly throwaways (Accuview). It cost me $19 US in shipping and it only took 10 days for them to reach me. Well worth it!

All you need is the Rx from the old box of contacts. No new Rx is required.

Good luck!

I go to the best optician I could find for my contact lens prescription (after having a horrible experience with another opticians here who gave me incorrectly weight toric lenses argh), then I actually order the lenses from http://www.postoptics.co.uk who are WAY cheaper than the optician's prices. But my solutions all come from the States whenever someone visits, as those are really expensive here.
Summer 97 - first visited friends in London

Feb 02 - moved to London on BUNAC
Sep 02 - WP granted (IT skills shortage list)
Sep 04 - WP renewed
Sep 06 - WP renewed again (screwed by 4-5 year ILR change)
Sep 07 - ILR!
March 09 - Citizenship!
July 09 - bone marrow transplant :(
18 Sep 10 - wedding!
Mar 12 - half marathon in Paris! 1:47:12!
Oct 12 - Amsterdam FULL marathon! 3:48:23!
