Why are there diamonds with ? marks in them in random posts??

I have a theory, based on what I have seen on other forums, that the people whose posts have funny symbols in, are using Macintoshes? I seem to hear the word "unicode" whispering in my head...

I've been seeing empty boxes in my own posts (not sure if anyone else sees them), but I'm using a PC.

I'm not using Mac and I am seeing diamonds.

I had little question marks on one of my posts that I went back in and changed.  I am on a Mac

I've been having trouble with the GBP pound sign the last couple of days - it shows up fine when I type it in the reply box, but as soon as I press 'Preview' or 'Post', it disappears!

HP Desktop with Vista Home Premium and I'm getting boxes too.

Well, they definitely don't appear in my posts unless I go back and edit them.  I just made a post, it appeared without the boxes.  I edited it, they appeared.  I tried to edit them out when I edited it again, but they came back.

They appear in my posts at the end of sentences.  That leads me to think it's either punctuation characters or the fact I use double spaces after sentences.

I'm getting the boxes in only some of the messages.

I am using my TOSHIBA laptop and I have forgotten how to bring up the sterling sign, can anyone help?

On the desktop I used ALT 156.

Just put GBP.

Jim- Hold down Fn + Alt and type mjol (which is equivalent to your number pad on a desktop- 0163): £

Ironically it turned the pound sign to that diamond thingy! D'oh!

Are these still appearing for posts made from the time of this post? Feel free to reply this to experiment. I undid some template changes regarding javascript and charset of form boxes which might have been the cause. I realised I had also upgraded the template over the weekend. It would be nice if that sorted it.
