Sony make their PS3s the same and you can use any old bog standard cheapo kettle lead with an american PS3 in the uk. It doesn't need a power brick as it handles all the voltage conversion internally i.e it has a universal PSU. It's well designed!
I would also say that the PS3 is much more universal than the 360 actually :)
Unlike Microsoft they don't have a ginaormous stupid power brick and a proprietary kettle lead with an extra pin. Which is just an ordinary kettle lead but they get to charge you $40 if yours breaks.
Microsoft also region encode their games which is annoying as it stops you importing stuff that is different, not released in different territories.
If you want to talk about losses, M$ are making a loss on the 360, AND there paying huge sums for a costly, unexpected extended warranty program as they pushed out their console a year early so it has a variety of manufacturing defaults (the RROD is just one!DVD drive failures are a major issue as well!)

You should be able to pick up a UK kettle lead for a couple quid anywhere in the UK or just use a plug adaptor. I have an NTSC PS3 set up at work in this way.
Games are region free, you can set up a UK PSN account when you get here, blu-rays will be an issue, some are region free, some aren't. There are lists on the internet of what blu-rays are region encoded so check before you buy :)

So regardless of what the voltage and hertz says on my US PS3 (which it says 120v 60Hz) you are basically saying that the latest 80gb version  of the US PS3 changes everything internally.  Could you point me to where I can find out that info for myself.  It's not that I don't trust your word it's just that I like to see for myself as it is an expensive item to bring over with all the games and money already invested in it to then have to buy a converter etc....  But thanks for the info, it was interesting.

I don't mind, it's a scary idea plugging in, but it really is fine. I've brought PS3s all over the world (marketing events, game fairs etc) and just used either plug adaptors or local PC cords.

Have a video!

I can confirm that the PS3 requires no voltage converter. While it says 110v input on the PS3, on the inside of the box the components say 110-240v. So the only thing you require if you have a US PS3 is a plug adapter to make the PS3 plug fit into a UK outlet. Also, ALL PS3 games the world over are region-free, and SOME bluray movies are(google a list of region free blurays). UK PS2 games however will not play on a US PS3.

i'd like to say you DONT need an adapter, all you need is a kettle plug (the same plug you use for a desktop PC or get this, a kettle! ) I own one from the US a 40gb. Its fine we use us and uk games no problem; just dont try and sell your us games to a uk game buyer they wont take them.

all you need is a kettle plug (the same plug you use for a desktop PC or get this, a kettle! )

They're not actually exactly the same.  The basic sizes, shapes, pin spacings and so on are identical, but the kettle connector is designed to withstand the heat of the appliances on which it's used, and has a notch on the lower side.   "Hot" appliances have an inlet with a restricting raised lug so that only the connectors with the notch designed to withstand the heat will fit.

So you can use a kettle connector on a PC or similar device, but you can't use a PC connector on a kettle.

Well, this is Britain!  ;)

There's no problem using a kettle lead on a PC if you want to though.  It would be the reverse which would cause a problem due to the PC-type connector not being able to withstand the heat, which is why the connectors are keyed so that you can't accidentally use the "cold" lead on a "hot" appliance.
