If I leave my laundry in over night it ALWAYS smells bad in the morning. I would do my laundry at a different time and process it right away.

Ok I'm gonna send DH to clean out the filter and try a hotter wash with more soap and take out the laundry right away.

But answer me this....

Which slot does the soap go????????????????

I would hazard a guess as to say the left side..( not sure on the odd turquoise plactic thing tho, never seen that before )

You landlord should have given you a pack with the manual in.  If not..what make and model number is your machine? you could possibly find it online.  Again if not...I would use those tablets that go straight into the machine drum ;D

Nope he didnt give us anything with it. The front says Hotpoint Ultima 1400. I've had no luck finding a manual online.

I've been doing my washing at night for years and taking it out in the morning and never had a problem with smells; even when I was washing nappies. I generally wash on low temperatures with non-bio powder and don't use conditioner. I put the washing powder straight into the machine rather than in the drawer though. I used to have a plastic ball to put it in, but I lost it about a year ago, and just shaking the powder straight in round the clothes seems to work just as well.

Perhaps you do need to just clean the machine through with a boil wash or check the pipes as other people have suggested.

I think I posted about this a few years ago only it was my machine that smelled more than my laundry.

First, since you are renting, don't assume that anything has been maintained or connected propery. Most UK washing machines do NOT hook up to the hot water tap. They heat the water internally. So see if you can verify how it should be hooked up with that manual you found.

Second, regardless of how it hooks up, you'll need to do some monthly or even weekly maintenance. We found that a wash (with nothing in the machine) on hot with a splash of bleach and/or vinegar helped a lot.

I think powdered soap has a tendendy to build up more in the works than liquid and perhaps fabric softener as well. We didn't use softener or powder. IMO, you *should* be able to do a night-time wash and hang things out the next morning. We could, but it took all the above to keep things smelling nice!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

How about running it through a hot cycle with baking soda in it?  That's good for getting rid of stinks -- particularly if its sour.

I agree that night washes shouldn't smell in the morning.  As other have suggested and even my washing machine repairman, a 90 degree wash at least once a week will help to kill smells and give the machine a good clean.  It may be worth a good 90 degree wash and a plentiful helping of bleach without any clothes in the machine.  Let it cycle through empty and see that gets rid of smells.  Then move onto 90 degree washes once a week (I generally do this on a load of pure whites).

How do I test how hard my water is? I know I have been having issues with shampoo because of the water.

the water in Glasgow is quite soft.

We normally dont have enough hot water to do such a hot wash, but its worth a try.

The washing machine should be heating its own water... you dont have to 'have enough' hot water.

Is the inside of your kettle all furry-looking? Yes -- you have hard water.
