There are plenty of TV chefs who advocate using what is in the cupboard. Plenty of cookbooks geared towards this as well.

What on earth were you making that got you so bent out of shape?! ;D
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I just found this website http://www.bettycrocker.com/recipes There is an easy meal finder, you can put up to 3 ingredients and as an option, what you would like to make with your ingredients.

This!

Also, it's not as if you *have* to buy something extra for a recipe and then never use it again - experiment!  Try adding it to another dish, and see what happens!   I bought paprika - something I hardly ever use - for a batch of cheese straws, and now DH, who'd never encountered it before, adds it to EVERYTHING! ;D

I am all about paprika these days!  We have (well, had--I've used it all up!) three different types: smoked paprika which is hotter (and smokier) than normal, regular paprika, and sweet Spanish paprika.  I've been using it *instead* of black pepper in loads of different recipes.  [smiley=chef.gif]

Paprika is fab!  We use it a lot for making Spanish dishes, Hungarian-style goulash (inspired by one of Steve's workmates), great on deviled eggs, etc etc.

Another vote for paprika! I love it! I always sprinkle a lot on potato salad.

Another paprika fan here! I use it when I make chili, amongst other spicy things like curries, spicy pasta sauce, etc

Yep, I love paprika. I use it nearly every day on something or other. It's great with beef, prawns, eggs, chili, taco seasoning, and loads of other stuff. One of my fave seasonings.

I bought some Thai seven spice for a recipe for asian chicken noodle soup I wanted to make, and DH and I loved the flavour, so I have used nearly the whole jar making asian chicken salads, all sorts of stir fry, and more. It's good to try new things out. I like having a variety of oils on hand, too, like groundnut oil for curries and toasted sesame oil for stir fry and marinades. They are expensive, but last a long time since you don't need to use very much at a time. Oils and seasonings really liven up things that might otherwise be a bit dull.

Yes, it's very good on potato salad and on egg salad and deviled eggs too. :)

Sometimes trying a new spice can backfire though like when I bought chinese 5-spice powder for a recipe (Hoisin chicken wings) and found I haaaaaaated it. Now I'm stuck with a jar of the stuff that I'll never use. :-\\\\ But, luckily that very rarely happens. :)
