It isn't new, it has been on the market as prescription for years.

It causes uncontrollable oily discharge/leakage from your, ummm, lower half and many people wear products to protect against this.

People who were on it for a year saw an average extra 2.7 kg weight loss over those taking a placebo.

"Adverse events

Gastrointestinal adverse events predominated with orlistat, and included fatty/oily stool, faecal urgency, and oily spotting in 15% to 30% of patients. Faecal incontinence occurred in 7% of those on orlistat compared with 1% on placebo, a number needed to harm of 17. "

A friend of mine was on these a few years ago and nothing would convince me to take them, no matter how fat I was.  Having to use plastic sheets to protect against overnight leakage - forget it.

I still remember her telling us about the after effects of eating a chippie whilst taking them.   :-\\\\

As others have said, the adverse effects of this pill are absolutely vile. The upside is that once you experience it, you will avoid eating fat all together.

Its fair to say...that after reading the rest of this thread..I nearly vomited over my keyboard! How grim! and odd that it will be allowed without doctors consent.  I can imagine teenage girls jumping on the bandwagon taking it.

Damn it, back to excersise and eating healthy..

They can only buy it if they have a BMI of 28, so hopefully that will help.

Dude, oily discharge is nasty. What happened to people just changing their lifestyle a bit, trying to control their portions, and moving around a bit more? It does take a bit of effort, but it's way better than "leakage" problems. That's just plain gross.

Laziness: take the easy (and nasty) way out.   :P  Well, at least you could look at it from this point of view: KARMA.   ;D

No, I'm not trying to start an argument on weight loss drugs and I'm not saying that people get what they deserve.  I know some people do struggle with their weight and to them the leakage may be worth it, but for a lot of people they see it (taking a weight loss pill) as an easy way out of working on controlling what they eat and think a pill will solve it for them.

It's supposed to train you to avoid eating the fatty foods - but what a heck of a way to do it. [smiley=puke.gif]

It even says to carry an extra pair of dark trousers until you get used to the product.

I think that explains it all!  You are meant to eat a low fat diet whilst on the medication.

How anyone could expect to lose weight from eating a chippie is beyond me!

It's Xenical at a reduced dosage.

Been there... done this.. and you DON'T want to take this pill!!!!

I ate something one time with what I thought had the minimalist of fat in it and OH BOY the reaction!!

SOO not worth it!

I worked in a pharmacy for years, and on the odd occasion we dispensed Xenical I had a hard time not getting the giggles.  I don't find weight problems funny (I was 280 pounds myself at the time) - but I do remember the words "explosive oily discharge" being used on the commercial.  THAT I found funny.  There is a better way.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

[smiley=puke.gif]  Yeah, that's just sick. I'd either be happy and fat or take the slow, healthy track to weight loss. If it was a magic pill you took and slept for two days and woke up thin, what would the sheets look like when you woke up two days later?  That fat would have to go somewhere...  :-X  [smiley=puke.gif]  I mean, I have some black trousers, but I don't wear them because I have to disguise greasy skid marks!  You'd be minging besides trying to hide the appearance of it! Oh, the horror of this thread! Yet, I am laughing too, because it is kind of funny, but also sad.  :P
