Does anyone else not like the new search function?
« on: January 22, 2009, 04:09:10 PM »
Anyone?

I'm getting really annoyed when I try to search for posts, as the results also go to peoples profile info.  For example if I do a search and it includes 'Sheffield' because my location is Sheffield it brings up every single post I've made in the results.  This is just crap IMO; its not what I'm searching for!   >:(

So, does anyone else find fault with the new search function?  Is there a way to bypass this or narrow down search parameters like there used to be (albeit somewhat limited)?   :-\\\\

It's better than the old one - is it google search? With google search there are ways to edit out what you don't want to find

I hadn't noticed that, but I've only used the new search a couple of times. So far, I have to say I prefer it to the old one ... because it works!  :)

I agreee that it works, however I don't see any way to edit responses or a way to edit out the profile info...

ie.  Chary if you did a search say for "in Cornwall" pretty much every post you made would come up.   :-\\\\

The new search is ok, but lots of times I know what forum I need to look in for something, and I liked being able to narrow down which forum search looked in.

Hmmm... you're right. I did a search for Cornwall and all my posts came up. But it is just a straight Google search, so I'd normally search for: +Cornwall +"ice cream" ... or whatever I was looking for. That would narrow it down.

About 7 months ago a lot of us put our background information in here and now I don't know how to find those posts.
When I see current posts sometimes I like to find out why the comments are made and such.
Does anyone remember the subject?

If you can't get the search function to work for you, you may want to try going back and looking at all the posts you've made in the past.  (Go to Profile, scroll to bottom and click on 'Show last Posts'...)   ;)

I think that would be a needle in a haystack project.

Google search tips:

If you are having trouble finding what you are searching for, try putting your search string in quotation marks, which makes Google find the whole string as a single unit rather than searching for each word individually. For example, searching "I really like wikiHow" will display only those results in which the phrase "I really like wikiHow" is used. If you do not know the name of a song but remember some of the lyrics, type in the words that you know in quotation marks. You should find the song immediately.

You can place a minus sign in front a word that you want to omit from your search results.   (Cornwall -Chary)

Place a plus sign next to any word that you want to be sure is included in your results page. This is only really needed if you want to include stopwords such as and or the.

I have to add my vote with those who don't like the new search. This one blows.

I also miss being able to search specific areas of the forum!

I've been able to find things in the past that I can't find with this one.
...the whole damn thing will turn
and return redefined, rearranged, rearranged...

The old search had nasty issues (incomplete results and resource hogging), but it's possible that it might work better with the upgrades we had over the weekend and possible that we can keep both so everyone's happy. I'll look into this on Sunday.

Thanks for looking into it, Leah.  The old search wasn't perfect, but it seemed to work better than this one.  I can totally understand you changing it in the first place though.
