I wonder why?  I just watched news on it last night and I listen to LA radio stations all the time.  Also, I shop in the states alot, so when doing a google search, if I open HotSpot Shield first, I get US sites as opposed to UK sites.  Not sure why it doesn't work for you, but I get great results from it.  I've been using it for months

Using Hotspot shield, I've only had 2 websites work for me that wouldn't work before  - the US Open website for the tennis coverage last summer and Fancast, which has some episodes of TV shows available via Hulu. I can't get anything to play on the network TV sites, such as ABC or Fox - it says that the media is not available to me because I am not in the US.

Are you waiting till it says it's connected before trying to go to the site you want to access?

Yep - I click on the icon, wait for it to connect and then go to the pages I want. It works for me in the sense that I get US sites when I do a Google search, but it won't let me watch any catch-up episodes on the US TV network sites (which probably have strict regulations on location anyway).

I've been using it for months too, but only some sites work for me. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I have a UK laptop? I don't know.

I'm pretty sure that you can listen to US radio stations and watch news sites without needing to connect to a server though. I used to listen to BBC Radio 1 and my local Bristol radio stations online all the time when I was in the US - the radio stations are usually international so that people can listen from anywhere in the world.

Not necessarily.  I tried to listen to live streams a couple of times before I installed it and got a restricted access warning.  Simple things like radio broadcasts.  Granted, I don't use it often, but it's nice to have when I have trouble accessing sites.

I listen to all kinds of streaming radio and never have a problem. I use radiotime.com as a conduit, usually, though I do go straight to the station's site sometimes.

I just tried getting a clip off Hulu using hotspot shield and got a timeout problem, but I had a different browser open at the same time (I'm a serious resources hog) so it probably wasn't a fair test.

There are some other "tricky" ways in which sites can determine that you're probably outside the U.S. besides the IP address.  For example, via headers and scripts they might pick up that your operating system is configured to non-U.S. settings (date & time format, keyboard layout, etc.), or that your clock is set to a time zone beyond U.S. borders, and those things will generally just be passed on unchanged via a basic proxy server.  The proxy would need to carry out a lot more analyzing and editing of data to get around those checks.

I use streaming Netflix through my XBOX360. I have a two at a time plan with Netflix, which is the minimum to have unlimited streaming movies.  Unfortunately, I set my instant queue using a US VPM on my work computer.  The good thing is that I can put about 50 things in teh queue, and don't hve to do anything else on the XBOX.  You do need a XBOX gold account and a Netflix account.  I'm looking into using my US router for a proxy server.  I'm not optimistic, though.

I also have a Slingbox set up in a closet at our house in the US, so are able to get all our US tv shows on our computer.

does this mean I should have brought my US router with me... because that can be used as a US proxy?   (not sure)..   but I didnt bring it.  Does it help if I bring one?

I've noticed I cant access some things from the UK like verizon wireless for which I wanted to make a payment... now looking for a way around it...  I guess calling them would work.
But I'd like to solve the 'accessing US sites' problem in general...

No it won't help.
And if you threw a party

I haven't really found a way around it  - at least in terms of watching US shows.  Some UK sites do post them a few days afterwards, but it's a crapshoot, really.    I haven't had a problem accessing my US sites for bills, though.  You sometimes just have to switch your preference on the sites so it defaults to US/UK/wherever, but as far as that's concerned, I haven't had an issue.  Just with the TV shows!

good, that's good to hear, because I gave mine away before realizing I did have some extra space on my suitcases to bring it...   hopefully I dont have to buy one again soon, I noticed some plans give it to you for free/included...

Also, I tried hotspotshield and I was able to log in to verizon wireless and even hulu!!!
I've heard it doesnt work with netflix, but I'll try or keep looking for a way...

Although after installing this, I got some warnings from windows live oneCare saying there was some unwated pontentially harmful software on my computer, so hopefully not!

i'm not sure why you can't access Verizon Wireless. I was able to go onto their website and check my bill. Wait until you get an email from them and click the link directly in the email an it should work....otherwise I'd consider contacting your ISP.

Oh, and I discovered that if you have a US iTunes account, you can still buy and download off the US store from the UK, so you can get TV shows that way, too.

How does the slingbox work? I'm considering getting one and setting it up at my mom's either before I move, or now so Tim can watch the same stuff I do.

I bought one when I was going back and forth. You attach it to your US cable box, and it streams over the internet to wherever you are. It gives you remote control of the box. So, not so great for your parents, if they want to watch TV. You can watch whatever they're watching, though.

That's why it's legal and the cable company doesn't care -- you aren't pinching their signal, you're controlling your box from afar.

We don't have a cable boxes at out house, but we do have cable jacks in every room, so couldn't I just plug it into the jack in my bedroom and it wouldn't affect the other TVs?
