Cost of shipping stuff back home (to the US)
« on: January 26, 2009, 08:51:33 PM »
Still considering either a move back to Washington/Oregon or to Minnesota. But I haven't a clue how much it would cost.

Anybody who moved their stuff back, would you be willing to share how much it cost? And if you liked or didn't like your moving company. Did they pick up from your house, or did you have to take it down to a warehouse somewhere. And any hidden costs would be great to get a heads up on.

When I moved over to the UK from the US west coast, it cost about $2000 to ship 200 cubic feet of stuff. I'd have about the same amount, maybe a bit more, but not like a whole house full of furniture.

Thanks,

I'm in the US now, but DH is still in the UK with all our stuff. We were quoted about £700 (I don't have the figure to hand but it's around that) for 100 cu ft with Upakweship. That's pick up from Cumbria to delivery in Baltimore. There aren't supposed to be any hidden costs except a small fee on the US side which I think they quoted around $200 (again, I'd need to go find my notes to confirm that cost).

We found all shipping companies to have good stories and horror stories so we've just chosen Upak because they are less expensive (because, well, you pack!).
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

We used Robinsons and moved a 2 bedroom flat, minus a kitchen, we did a shared container, and we paid about 4500 GBP for everything, including insurance and packing and delivery. We had no problems at all except a broken computer, which was reimbursed to us in full because we insured it separately. We moved from London to Atlanta and it took about 10 weeks.

We used Robinson's when moving back to the US and it was a nightmare (posted it last year on this site). They lost our bed and didn't pack everything. When I returned home, left for a short while to finish packing up my the office, they were gone and forgot to pack our kitchenware (we had to take it to the tip at the last minute) and a closet full of winter coats and other gear (donated the stuff to the Salvation Army because we didn't have room in our luggage). They were terrible!

I used UPakWeShip over to the UK and they were great....use them if you can!
