WTF?! I'd be calling every 10 mins to the police!!! Especially now. This is just not right!

Yes! Deffo! Report the theft. Get a "Crime reference number" from the police, in writing, and add it to your legal dossier (you are keeping one, aren't you?).

We got a reference number from the police, and are going to talk to them again when we go into town later this morning.  I'm also going to report my dongle being damaged, since it hasn't been working right ever since I found it lying on the floor.  We're keeping papers regarding this--a copy of the tenancy agreement, and the letter from the landlady stating that the neighbor has keys.

I would say something small is missing..... for e.g a couple of CDs or something ( I know thats naughty lying to the police and that someone on here will say don't do it) but at least it will get the police to your house and force them to investigate someone snooping in your home.

Why do you keep advising people on UKY to act illegally? Just wondering ... .

I was wondering the same thing! The OP has been given some really good advice here by a lot of people ... but surely you don't think that lying to the police is adviseable??  ???

Not advised..more stated that is something I would do / done that has worked for me.

Sometimes in my experience the nicey nicey approach doesn't work.....

I have hardly beat up a pensioner, or fire bombed someones house etc....if you are trying to suggest I am some form of social asbo delinquent..its not working and does not wash..

Um.  I don't know if anyone thinks I'm making things up, but honestly, missing bed linens and towels are about the weirdest thing to steal.  Regardless, I want to reiterate that I have no intention of lying to the police.

I wasn't suggesting anything, like I said I was just wondering, because I saw this thread and that other one where you said something about slashing a kids' ball with a knife, which, frankly, even if you were joking, sounds a teeeeeny leeetle bit over the top.  Also, it's not really good for UKY to have people continually advocating breaking the law.  Probably not good for you personally either, if some vigilant copper saw the posts and decided to trace your IP.  So, I'm just asking nicely, as a member of the legal profession,  if you wouldn't mind taking a few deep breaths before posting stuff like that in future.  That's all, thank you.

It is very strange, sounds like a kids prank really, but still something the police should look into.

I definitely don't think you're making it up.  When I lived in Wyoming, my ex and I had moved into a basement apartment.  Unknown to us at the time, the previous tenant of the apartment was a mother with three boys, all pre-teen age.  The just moved to the upstairs apartment because it was a 3 bedroom, but she still had the key to our apartment.  For months we had things go missing, like Twinkies, potato chips, pop, and movies.  We kept thinking we were going crazy because people don't steal items like that.  I came home from work one day to find all 3 boys sitting in my living room, eating my food and playing my ex's Playstation :o

In any case, I second the idea of a motion sensor, or a webcam that functions similarly. And I sincerely hope you two can get out of there as quickly as possible.  Best of luck.

I would have to do something to get arrested first...which will neven happen. ;)  I am not worried about a vigillant copper checking my IP address because I was a day late getting a tax disc...which is as about as illegal as I have ever been  :-\\\\

Point taken on board tho.  Must remember not to talk as I would in a pub and remember this is a forum....

The kids ball with a knife is something I have done, and worked.  Nothing illeagal about it..the little bleeder tried putting my windows in with it and a elderly nieghbours...and was tresspassing on our properties...he was warned constantly to leave us alone but persisted.....so I caught the ball as it entered my garden.....popped it with a kitchen knife and threw it back to him with a smile telling him to clear off or else....and the little monster never bothered us again. Nothing illeagal about it..the ball was on my land.

Not that this has anything to do with this thread so not sure what your objective is bringing it up as an example.  The OP's in question have gone about things "correctly" with regards to the snoopers so there is no problem.

That does not sound odd at all.  It sounds as tho they are winding you up on purpose to create a bad atmosphere.

I definitely don't think you are making it up. Doesn't sound like you need to lie to the police, you have plenty of true stuff to tell them. Stealing or interfering with things such as bedlinen, towels, etc - articles that touch you directly - sounds like a campaign of harrassment designed to make you feel uncomfortable in your own home. It is deeply creepy and I personally would take it very seriously indeed. It hits you "where you live" (literally in this case). We had builders in once and my girlfriend was sure that somebody had been in the drawer where she keeps her underwear. For quite a while she tried to persuade herself she was "being silly", but eventually she threw everything out and bought new things.

I would immediately wash all my stuff that they might have touched. You could get pruritis or something. But that's just me.

That is the worse feeling.  I have had that done too..bless her.

I think any personal space violation can leave you feeling really uneasy and conscious of everything you leave laying around in your house.

Seriously guys..this situation is terrible.  Deffo go and see a solicitor for your free 30minutes and see what they suggest...you need to get out of this hell hole your living in..

I don't know, maybe its just me. But I find most of LuckyCruz's posts hilarious and witty. Even if the do mention *cringe* illegal things, I have taken all of them more in a joking matter and the comic relief is nice  :P

I went to the police station today and made a report, and they're sending someone around tomorrow morning to investigate.  I think they might be talking to the neighbor as well, since the guy who took my report asked me about which flat the neighbor with the keys lives in.

ETA: The officer who took my report also asked me what "kind" my neighbors were and if they were "classy" and just breaking in out of spite--I wasn't sure what he meant exactly, but I told him that yes, we were certain that this was out of spite.

This is great news...if nothing else..the neighbours will have a bit of a bottom puckering moment when questioned.  If they want the responsibility of the keys..they can have the responsibility of something going wrong!

Fingers crossed this turns out well for you.
