Sugar-free products
« on: June 10, 2004, 10:29:27 PM »
Hi all, went to Sainsbury's with DH tonight.  I've been doing my own low-carb way of life eating.  I've given up sweets, which is my absolute favorite stuff to eat! (Anyone who has had Cold Stone Creamery knows how I mourn!  Mmmmm, Cake Batter ice cream, help me)  So here is the problem, I could not find one sugar-free or even low sugar dessert type thing, mainly ice-cream or yoghurt.  I was so upset, I looked at DH and said, hello isn't anyone Diabetic in this country, for goodness sake what do they do!!!???  (I have strong feelings on that subject, as I dated a type one-diabetic and know how hard it was for him!!!)

Seek out your local health food stores Stacey. In my little town, there was at least 5 within walking distance of my flat and another few within an hours walk (and I didn't live in a granola-crunchie town either!) It seemed almost every mall in town had a hmmm.. damn, someone help me here- something and Barrett? Holland and Barrett? Its a chain health food store- they have tond of no sugar, no or low carb, etc....  :-*

Ohhhh, yeah!!!  Thanks, I forgot those!  I will go look there.  I will also have my mom send the sf jello to me.  I have some of the sf jelly here, but I'm afraid I will hate it.  hmmm.  Thanks again!!!

I've been having the same problem - if you ask for sugar free chocs they look at you like you have 2 heads :)

I found a local health food store that stocks a protein powder, and some soya products... but no sugar free sweets or jams :(

I'm having trouble finding low carb bread... any ideas? Other than to just do without  :-\\\\

I found that low carb bread is not possible in the UK unless you make it yourself.  This was how I discovered that I did not care about bread so much.  :D

Other than that, I have made considerable use of the protein powders from Holland & Barrett.  They routinely put their protein powder on 50% off sale and that's when I stock up.  They also sell shakers in the store.  It's a good LC emergency food for those times when you have no idea when or where you are going to eat.

I am not a big candy fan so have had little problem with desserts.  I just assumed that the LC ice cream I so enjoyed in the USA would not be available here.  In the end, for me, that's been a good thing.  Other than cordials like Bailey's, ice cream is my big high-carb temptation.

You can buy low-carb bread at Tesco (I forget the brand name, but it comes in a yelow bag and begings with an N I think) - at 7.5 grams per slice. I always avoid that stuff though, because 1 piece leads to about a thousand pieces.  :-\\\\

Tholian, you can get an ice-cream maker from Argos and use the recipe used in the Atkins book - ice cream made from douible cream & eggs & some other stuff. i've never made it myself but I've eaten it, and it's sparkly good.

Holland & Barret also now sell Atkins chocolate bars - as does Boots - for emergency chocolate needs. :)
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

Stacey, you should try Rowntree's sugar-free jelly...I was wary of trying it, too, but it's just as good as Jello.  :-)

Thank you all!  Lola, I think I have some of that somewhere, just afraid to make it.  I'll give it a go though.

OK, I made the Rowntree and it does not seem to be set yet?  It's been in the fridge overnight, but it still seems not to firm.  Is that normal, or does it take longer for the jelly here to set?  Thanks ;D

The Sweet Factory has some good sugar-free sweets if you're really needing a little fix...

I'm a member of a low-carbing forum, and although i've not seen these myself, someone on the forum has advised that Superdrug sell low-carb versions of KitKats and Rolos... these have apparently just come out recently.

I think he said the pack of Rolos was 5.9g carb as opposed to the usual 39g carb!!
I assume Nestle/Rowntree have achieved this by using sweeteners other than sugar?

WOW!!!!  So of course Superdrug is closed now ;)  I'll check it out ASAP.  Thanks!!!  Would you mind sharing the forum address?  I'd be interested in joining.  Thank you Broxi!!!!

You can find sugar free chocolate at Boots,, but to be honest,, you have to keep in mind, that it can cause tummy problems, due to the sorbital in it. My diabetic nurse has warned me off eating it. Plus, it still has a nice bit of fat in it.

Thanks Tebs.  I know all about that ;D  Does not bother me that much anymore.  The fat I don't mind eating.  As it is I've been eating a lot of nuts as a snack.  Just want to have the option for something sweet.  (And only a little at that)
