I've never been a big fan of forums, and this is really the only one I've ever gotten into. And I love it!

I am a HUGE blog reader. Don't have one of mine own, though.

I often wonder about Facebook - is that a forum?  Seems like everybody and his dog are always talking about Facebook, and recently a good friend of mine has been trying to talk me into joining.  But I've seen another friend's Facebook, and I honestly don't think I really 'get' the point of Facebook.  I'm quite a wordy person - not into one-liners, which is why LJ suits me.  I'm also not much of a photographer - that's hubby's domain and he's on Flickr for that.  So I just don't see any reason to be on Facebook really.  Maybe someone can enlighten me otherwise?

I use facebook simply to see what my old friends and acquaintances are up to- I don't do much on it myself like add photos or blog or anything like that, which means I'm only on facebook once or twice a week at most.  I'll change my staus message and keep my profile relatively up to date, but that's it.  But I do enjoy looking at what other people do!

Ugh. I have one. It was a great idea back when I spent ten hours a day in a cubicle bored out of my head.

Now that I've made the move and I have things to do all day...not so much.

I like to keep track of friends on Facebook. I'm not a huge participant, though. And, of course, the people who update the most are those people from High School I don't really remember all that well and don't seem to remember liking all that much.

I'm huge on LJ.  I think the communities can be like a 'forum' of a sort, except obviously more limited in focus and spectrum.

I used to haunt a few other forums related to (often literary) other interests, but those have slowly fallen by the wayside.  I do read the Moneysavingexpert forums, but only to utilise the info - not for the 'community' aspect.  UK-Y's my only real active participation.

I love Facebook and LJ. Facebook is a completely different animal from LJ though, so a comparison doesn't really work. On FB, I can keep track at a glance with what 200+ friends are up to - see photos of their families, where they live, etc. And I kind of do like the one-liners, to be honest. It is nice to hear a more in-depth description of people's lives sometimes, but at other times I find that sort of overwhelming. I find that I share more personal things with a much smaller group of friends on LJ, and use FB for sharing far less personal things with a far larger group - which is fun.

Plus, it's got me back in touch with tons of people I haven't heard from in years. Decades, even! I've reconnected with old school friends, ex-boyfriends, childhood friends, old teachers, etc. It's been amazing. And sometimes that leads to interesting connections - like finding out that a guy I went out with when I was 19 somehow also knows one of my very best friends! I never knew they knew each other!

Recently, I've also found that I use it for sending private messages, rather than AOL. I still have and use my email address, but most people seem to contact me through FB these days.

And if that doesn't float your boat, there are all the games!! I am competely addicted to Scramble, Lexulous, Pathwords, Word Twist, etc.!   ;D

I don't even think I have 200 friends, and if I did - I would find THAT overwhelming!  :o  :)

As for people in the past, I sort of figure there's a reason we don't keep in touch anymore.  ;) :)

The games sound good but I think I spend too much time online already.  My friend was trying to get me to join for the IM/PM feature - I think.  Thanks for the insight - something to think about.

I agree with everything Chary says about FB and LJ. Those are my only other regular haunts. I don't find FB overwhelming because I don't feel obligated to respond to everyone, I just really enjoy the pithy little one liners. I also find it easier to fit in a few minutes on FB even when I don't have time to read or write much. I've got back in touch with tons of people I used to work with in my former life and have really loved that!

That game is gonna be the end of me.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say

;D I agree with you on that one. I get really weird'ed out when I am confronted with my past.  :-X - so I don't have a huge number of friends on Facebook. and I haven't really figured out its full potential.

But I'm curious about LJ. What is it, exactly? What could I use it for?

It's for blogging - like keeping a personal diary online.  Some people might diarise their daily lives, their travels, post recipes, use it as a means to keep family or friends up-to-date on what's going on in your life, expound upon the meaning of life - really whatever you want yours to be - whatever you want to write about!  You choose how private you want it to be - you could make it completely public, you could restrict it only to the friends you want to see it, or you can make it for your eyes only.  For instance, mine is friends-only - and also most people that I know on it use what are called 'filters' where some posts you might make visible to a wider friends-group, some maybe only your closest friends can see, and some you might write for your eyes only.

There are also lots of special interest communities on it - for just about any kind of interest you can imagine.  But I don't pay much attention to that aspect of it.

Thanks, Mrs R, I'll check it out. And I'm sure I'll end up using it, since it sounds like something else to keep me from working.  :P

I love LJ!  I've been on there for close to 8 years now.  It really comes into its own when you have a network of friends who all use it.  I love the community aspect of it as well..I met my husband on an LJ community, so I'm quite partial to it anyway. ;)
