Gift Ideas
« on: January 29, 2009, 05:06:59 PM »
I need to bring a gift for meeting my UK boyfriends' parents. I'm from Maine, so I'm considering a large container of pure Maine maple syrup. Opinions and/or suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Brits don't really eat maple syrup on their pancakes, and British pancakes are more like crepes, anyway. So my suggestion is to make them a bunch of American style pancakes, slather them in the syrup and show them what they are missing!  ;D
If we called them Sad Meals, no one would buy them.

How about maple sugar candies (the ones that come in boxes and are shaped like maple leaves, apprx 1 inch wide by 1 inch high?)  They're fairly easy to carry, relatively lightweight, and can be put in a candy dish to share with others by the lucky recipient.

Ooo! That's a good idea! We also have a specialty mustard, chutney, sauce and mixes place called Stonewall Kitchen (http://www.stonewallkitchen.com/. Perhaps that's a better route.

I used to eat maple syrup on pancakes / crepes, but strangly it does taste better on American pancakes.  Only problem is that the pancake soaks up the syrup...so you end up using EVEN MORE SYRUP!!!

This is what my Mom brings my inlaws.  It's always popular.

I think the candy is a good idea!

Yup, getting it aaaaall out of the way. ;)  But, honestly, we're going for Sunday dinner at his parents on the /last/ day I'm in town, which is 10 days after I arrive. Should be fine. :)

My BF and I did something similar, kind of.  I actually met the parents when I met him a year and half earlier at a Scotland football match.  BF and I have a common friend which is how we met.  Anyway, when we started dating, things happened really fast and within a few days I found myself sitting down to a proper dinner with his parents.  The strangest part of it all, was that it didn't feel weird.  It wasn't until days later, when I was traveling on a train alone, that I reflected that by American standards, or at least my American friends' standards, meeting the parents that fast is a bit odd.  Oh well, they are lovely people and it seems to be all working out.

I hope you have a wonderful time and I'll keep my fingers crossed that the weather is nice (since I'll be over the pond at the same time) *wink, wink*

Wow, that website made my mouth water (and I have a full belly from DH's yummy stir fry!)

Maybe you could hedge your bets and bring a mix of sweet and savoury items.  I'm sure whatever you bring, it will be well enjoyed and much appreciated!  All the best and keep us posted!

My friend gave me a big jar of Maine Blueberry Jam for Christmas and I think that would be an awesome present!
