Look what the cat dragged in...
« on: June 11, 2004, 08:50:17 PM »
Okay... *sheepish grin*  I've been MIA for quite awhile, but I think I've got my scheduling problems figured out now.  So I hope to be around a little more often in the future.

I've been to Canada and back with the family, have had three summer colds since we've been back (that's four weeks, just for reference sake), and have been attempting to catch up with the karate training I missed while I was away.  I've been applying for jobs and teacher's college, and will be officially graduating with my MPhil degree on June 23... or whenever they mail my degree to me.

So yeah, just a bit busy, and computer fun took a hit.  But I'll talk with you all more often now!

Welcome back Morgana, its good to see you again.  How was your time in Canada?

Hey Kizmet.  We had a great time, thanks.  Connor loves playing with Nana and Pop-Pop, to the point of wearing out the grandparents.  I've never seen my mom that frazzled in years!   ;D

The trip back to the UK was a nightmare though.  Flight delayed for over 5 hours, plus we had to go to Gatwick first, then fly to Manchester.  Then the trains out of Manchester airport were broken due to points failure, and it took another nearly 3 hours to get out of the airport (no buses to main station, until 5 minutes before the points were fixed and trains running again).  Then we still had to change trains at the main station to get back to York.  All in all, it took exactly 24 hours of travel time to return home.  Zoiks!

Still loved being home though.  And we're planning a Christmas visit for this year too, so something else to look forward to!

Yowza! That's an adventure and a half!

Don't you just love when transport lets you down?

From the Beeb, yet!

Hoser, Hosehead - Canada Wide - noun (arcane) - Slightly derogitory term popularised in the mid-Eighties by Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis when they conceived the characters Bob and Doug MacKenzie on the variety show SCTV2. No self respecting Canadian actually uses these terms anymore. Comparable to "Idiot" or "Moron".

I don't know whether this sprang from the Bob & Doug MacKenzie routine, but I've also heard hosed too.  For example:

We planned an outdoor party, but it rained.  That certainly hosed my day.
Insert wonderfully creative signature here …

Wow.  "Hoser" made the BBC...   ;D  *basks in the glory*

Anyhow... yes, Howard, the origins of 'hoser' rest with Bob and Doug Mackensie, and their terrible 'cable show', The Great White North.   The predecessor of Wayne's World, really.  But with less heavy metal.  More beer.  And the theme song...  oh, how it haunts me!

From my youth, I remember 'hoser' being initially derogatory, as it was intended.  But I don't think it was ever as vicious as "idiot" as the BBC site suggests.  More along the lines of "slacker" or "jerk"...  at least, that was how I used it.

As the years passed, and Bob and Doug moved on into comedy history, nostalgia has now infused this term with more affection for a time gone by...  Yeah, whatever!  LOL  Sorry - it's true, though.  You can mark out an entire generation with the single word, "Hoser!"  Still derogatory, but in an affectionate punch-on-the-shoulder kind of way.

Caitlinn - you're right about that too.  I'm pretty certain it was a direct link - in fact, I think the Duo themselves used it often too.

Peedal - you're a star to have found that website!  I've sent the link to all my Canadian friends!  Cheers matey!
