Edamame
« on: February 03, 2009, 01:44:42 PM »
Is this not available here? In the US we got it everywhere and in every form.
Dry roasted and crunchy, pre-shelled and frozen, in shell and steamed, canned...etc.

I've been to Tesco, Aldi, and Sainsbury and no sign of it in any form.  ???

I found it in the frozen veg section at Waitrose. It's pretty expensive here!

The only place I saw it was in an oriental (chinese/east asian/whateverpctermyouwanttouse) store near Derby City Centre. It was dry roasted.

You definitely get them in some supermarkets because I have a bag in my freezer right now.  I don't think they are labelled Edamame though, just soy beans.

We used to buy it at both Sainsbury's and Morrisons, shelled and frozen like peas. It even looked like a bag of peas but for the life of me I can't recall the brand name, but they were definitely in the frozen veg section. It was a green and white plastic bag, but as someone else suggested maybe not labelled as edamame.

Morrisions also occasionally had it fresh in the pod for snacking.

Yep. I've definitely bought them frozen and shelled at both Sainsburys and Waitrose. I wouldn't mind finding a cheap resource of them still in the pod though. Oh, and Food Doctor does jars of dried ones - I use them on salads. They're usually with either the nuts and snacks (Waitrose) or in the "free from" section (Sainsburys).

The last time I bought them was a while ago (over a year, easily), but the fresh (not frozen) shelled ones were in the veg section at M&S.

I was just thinking about them this morning... weird. I haven't seen any fresh ones at Sainsbury's, which I definitely prefer, but I guess I could check the Free From section to see if there are any dried ones. I like to salt the pods, squirt on some lemon, and then pull them out of the pod with my teeth. Maybe they are seasonal? I will have to check some other places next time we go, whenever that will be. Sainsbury's is the only major supermarket that is convenient for us.  :(

Sainsbury's definitely has the frozen ones.  They're called Bird's Eye Soya Beans.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

I've looked in all the stores around my area, but never found them either.  I was so excited when I went to a sushi bar in Victoria Station while visiting London and was able to buy some to take on the train home.

I really miss edamae. :(

Morrisons has frozen soy beans made by Birds Eye, not in the pod, but just the same. Try your local Oriental Supermarket, they have everything usually!
