Pre-paid envelopes- how do I tell?
« on: February 04, 2009, 01:52:41 PM »
Sorry, I'm really being daft, but how can you tell if you've got a pre-paid envelope?    I've got one with a number by then looks like it has a space for a stamp, so I've always never looked and stuck a stamp on it.  However, my letter said it included a pre-paid envelope to send things in and now I'm ???

That's an official royal mail prepaid envelope.

We send out "prepaid envelopes" at work, but they're just regular ones with a first class stamp on (so a self-addressed stamped envelope, really.)

Other prepaid envelopes can also look like this:

Okay, mine looks like that, except a 1 instead of a 2.  But it looks like there's a space for a stamp! I don't get it.
So if I don't put a stamp on it, it will still get there?  Sorry, I know a stamp isn't a big deal cost wise! I'm more curious that anything!!!

You don't need a stamp on it.  The number 1 is regard to 1st class paid and number 2 is to 2nd class paid  :)

You can put a stamp on if you want, but you don't have to.  If it is a pre-paid from a utilities company or the government, then you might decide to leave it and let them pay for the postage.  But sometimes pre-paid envelopes come from charities and this gives the ability to choose whether to save them money and put a stamp on yourself.

On a related note, you might sometimes see an address which includes the word "FREEPOST" within it, e.g.

Acme Supplies Ltd.
FREEPOST ABC123
Anytown
XX99 1ZZ

You don't need to use a stamp when sending to an address like this even if you just use your own plain envelope.

I'm so glad I'm not alone in getting confused about this...

I went to the post office and told the lady I needed a stamp for this envelope... she looked at me weirdly and said... "no you don't!" - and went on to point out the word "Freepost" on the envelope.... I sheepishly asked her could I just drop the envelope with her in that case.

I came out of the post office and have never felt so stupid in my whole life.

All good information. I'm adding this to "The Book".
