Found money
« on: February 06, 2009, 12:20:31 PM »
This isn't a serious post, more of an amusing observation of mine.... I've lived in Newcastle for just over three weeks and it seems like every time we go out, we find money on the ground. At first it was a penny or two pence here and there, then five pence, then yesterday between DH and me, we found 2 pence at the metro station, 20p in Tesco, and a fiver on the ground in our neighborhood!

I feel like every errand is a treasure hunt now. [smiley=laugh4.gif]

Whenever I take my son out to the indoor playground with a ball pool, I always have a rummage around for loose change…
One day I found £3! It was so funny!

Hiya!

On another financial forum I goto, there's a topic exactly like this. Thing is, people will log where they find money! then tot it up each month/year and report it on the forum!

Some keep the money and some give it to charity etc!

I've kept money I've found - usually just pennies etc, however I once saw a woman faffing around and she dropped £20 and walked off..   yes, for a split second I thought great I'll keep it! then I picked it up and ran after her and gave it back :)

now had it been 50 quid....    ;)

Cheers! DtM! West London & Slough UK!

The night before we went to California last Feb, DH & I went to get a pizza from Dominoes and were heading to the cash machine first and on the way to it I saw a piece of paper on the ground and picked it up...it was a £10 note. I kept it and we essentially got free pizza that night! ;D

When I lived in CA I found two $100 bills in a month. One in the parking lot of a gas station and the other was in the grass across the street from my house (I lived in a rural area).

I love found money!

When I last caught a bus...a rolled up piece of paper kept hitting my foot so I picked it up.  I thought it was a receipt initially but as I picked it up I noticed it was a fiver.  I was all on my own on the bus..so...well I kept it and bought some sweeties and a mag once i got off the bus.  Happy Days.

I suppose I could of handed it to the bus driver, but by the look of him he would have kept it too..

I found $700 blowing around on a sidewalk once in the US outside where I worked.  I was so excited, I was shaking.  But someone came around looking for it.  They had cashed their (whole) paycheck at the bank next door, and then apparently dropped the cash as they left.  Who does that?  Anyway, I gave it back to them because I felt sorry & thought about what if I'd been in the same situation (cos I lived paycheck to paycheck).  They gave me $50, and I think they might have also sent me flowers afterwards.

DH once found a £20 note floating in a puddle on a deserted walkway in Edinburgh (he used to work at a 24-hour ASDA and ride his bike down this system of cycle paths in the city at all hours).

I found a £5 laying on its own on the back seat of the upstairs of an Edinburgh bus.

Score!

I found a wallet on University of Texas at Austin campus once in front of the stadium entrance.  It had $400 in it, but all the guy's ID, too.  So I found his number in the phone book after looking at his driving license, and he came to my dorm to get the wallet and gave me $100!  We thought that was huge money back then!

Not exactly found money, but a nice old man gave me his shopping trolley today with the pound in the coin slot!  I offered him a pound, per the usual pound-for-trolley handoff that can happen between shoppers, but he refused.  So I bought a pack of biscuits at the store for 99p that I normally wouldn't because it was like getting them "for free."

When possible, I always return found money. I think I returned two wallets in my life. And karma paid me back in a big way: I had a wallet that contained $1600 returned to me without a single coin missing. I gave the guy $200.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

I think the worst case of someone not being rewarded for returning money was a really sweet old Homeless Bulgarian chap who lives within the town near me.  He found a wallet with £2000 in it and took it to the police station.  As the police were taking the details down of where he found this wallet a panicked man turned up to report it missing.  The police handed it back to the guy and pointed to the homeless guy who found it and handed it in.  The guy said thanks to the homeless chap and walked away.  He didn't even give the guy a few quid to go get something decent for dinner or a night in a B&B!! What a rotter.  Anywho, the police gave the homeless guy a letter stating he was of good character...but other than that..that was his reward.

I found a $20 bill in the aisle of Toys R Us once. There was no one else in the aisle and I stood there holding it for a bit to see if someone came by looking frantic before I decided to keep it. I figured if I handed it in the Toys R Us person would have just kept it, so i might as well keep it myself! Now if it had been a wallet or something, that would have been different. Turning that in is a no brainer.

I once found a $100 bill on the floor of my dorm's hallway. I was the only person except the resident advisor left in the building (right before Christmas) and she just told me to keep it. Mery Christmas to me!

I can't believe someone couldn't even spare a few quid for a homeless man doing a good deed. What a jerk, indeed.

I used to find money on the ground all the time in Leeds -- especially right after they introduced the pound coins.  People weren't used to them, I guess.  I found wallets a couple of times and turned those in to the police. You don't find much on London pavements in the way of money.
I'm always looking down and picking up odd pennies and dimes.  "See a penny -- let it lay -- have bad luck all that day"
I found $60 in an old handbag of my mother's that I was about to toss to Salvation Army.  Thanks, Ma.  Recently we found $40 Canadian on the floor of the car and haven't a clue where that came from  :o

I found someone's credit card (Platinum level at that) lying on the ground- no one around to claim it.  I called the bank to report it found- that person hadn't yet reported it gone. I could have gone on a huge shopping spree (in the states where they don't have the same precautions for shopping in stores or online with credit cards).  But instead I was a good samaritan!

I love finding money in pants pockets or jackets or just somewhere you didn't realize you had money tucked away. Its always such a reward!
