Check in US Dollars?

Is there anyway to change this over to sterling without losing a  lot of it?  How would I go about this?

With the exchange rate, you're not going to get a great deal regardless. :( I found that many high street banks would cash them but it would take 4-6 weeks to clear (depending upon the amount).

Something we are going to have to do for Glenn soon is have him sign over (endorse) a check in US dollars to me. I'll then deposit it in a US bank account and paypal it to him in the UK.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

That's what I was afraid of. Thanks.

I just deposited a check from my US bank into my UK account. The money vanished from my US account within a day or two and didn't turn up in the UK for almost five weeks, so some sticky-fingered bastiche had the use of my money for a month. The good news is, I got a pretty good exchange rate (1.46, not the 2-for-1 I was dreading last Summer) and no apparent processing fee.

I paid a US $400 cheque into my bank account back in September - it only cost me about £10 in fees and it cleared within a week (even though they told me it could take up to 28 days). I didn't really mind paying the charges for it as I got more than I was expecting anyway due to the falling exchange rate (it was a reimbursement for conference travel expenses, so I originally paid the equivalent of £200 for the ticket, but got back £225 even after the charges had been paid :)).
