Digital Luggage scale?
« on: February 09, 2009, 09:52:47 AM »
Hi

Not sure if this is the right place but has anyone ever used one of these??  I was thinking of getting one to take the guess work out of packing our bags.

i always weigh myself & then grab hold of the luggage.  works on the outbound- inbound may not have scale.

I got one for x-mas. Works a charm, highly accurate.

You can get 'em pretty cheap off ebay.  Try looking for fishing scale.  Same thing, but under a different name.   ;)  I'm going to get one to take to the states to keep there for us & family to use.

Jim, read the Subject line ! - perfectly clear!

Tmfigy et al,

As my extended family always has someone flying in or out of Heathrow luggage and weight has always been an issue for us with various airlines and routes having differing quotas.

We've been using digital bathroom scales for quite a while and found them to be very accurate when it comes to compare the home reading to when you check in and put your cases on the scales next to the check in desk - i'd estimate +/- 500 grams difference which even if you are that much over in allowance is usually waved right through without batting an eyelid by the check in person.

Good thing with bathroom digital scales is for a few seconds after taking the reading the weight is shown for a few seconds after you take the case off!

Get a glass topped one, as the plastic ones will get marked and scratched pretty quickly!

Hope this helps !

Cheers! DtM! West London & Slough UK!

Thanks for the replies.  I was wondering if the fishing one would work too but I couldn't think of what it was called.  At my parents house we would usually use the bathroom scale but traveling back and forth I was thinking of getting something for this side.

Can anyone recommend a brand or are the all about the same (except for price)?

Hubby and I were just shopping for one of these last weekend for my MIL's birthday.  You can find them at nearly all the high street shops that sell luggage or travel goods.  The ones we saw were all about £10, without much difference in price between brands.

I don't remember the name, it was one of those stores that sells camping gear, luggage and travel accessories, but we saw them in at least three stores, and I know one of them was Debenham's.  Just look for any shop with a travel theme, or the luggage section of a department store.  Sorry I can't remember anything more specific, we were actually shopping for a travel blanket and pillow, so the scale was a kind of afterthought  :(  I'm sure you'll find something, though.  Good luck!

We didn't have a digital one, ours had a round scale, but they are brilliant! Fantastic!

No particular brand, but FIL's the fisherman and he said for a decent digital fishing scale you'd pay between £10-£20.  Anything more than that's going to be quite inflated (but would still be good).   ;)  Just look for it to hold up to or above 50kg.

How have I been traveling for so many years and never seen one of those before?!?

When I lived in England the only scale we had was stones, so I had to weight myself, then myself and the bag, then convert the number to pounds. It makes my brain hurt just thinking about it!

I'm ordering one for myself and my sister! (who is quickly following in my travel-addict footsteps!  ;D )
