Tesco had something like a dill pickle in their International foods aisle.  I think it was in the Jewish food section, but can't remember the name.  I missed the sweet baby gherkins when I was there.   Could not find anything even close.

They have Krakus occasionally, and Mrs Elsworth Heimesha pickles in brine. Neither are what I'm looking for, unfortunatly. :(

Aless, I just looked on ASDA site and it's there.

You lot sound like my wife, ha-ha...She's from Texas and we had to drive 45 miles to get pickles.  We ate them driving home, along with Mountain-Dew, loads of American Candy, chips and anything else recognisable

Mort -

The ingredients are: gherkins (55%), water, salt, red pepper strips, garlic, vinegar, hot peppers, natural garlic flavor

Here's a photo of what the jar looks like now: http://pics.livejournal.com/aless02/pic/0001r863/

In my opinion, these are the sourest, strongest dill pickles I have found in the UK to date - and I'm a true pickle ADDICT.  I suppose they technically don't contain dill, but my main qualification (personally) is level of sourness.  I don't really like Krakus, personally - has a weird sweet under-flavor.

Yes, but they are made with sugar and because of that don't taste right, IMO.

ugh, sugar, that would be SO wrong :(

My hero! Thank you. :)

Not what I'm looking for but at least now I know. I'm looking for sour pickles that have no vinegar in the ingredient list. They're sold on Polish and Russian shops, I know, but for some reason not in ones I can get to. :(

Is this a dill pickle?  ???

Mrs Elswood makes another variety called, I believe, cucumbers in brine. (Or haimishe pickles or something like that) and they are available online from Tesco. They don't have sugar.

What cracks me up is the supermarkets who carry jars branded "AMERICAN PICKLES" and then list sugar as one of the first ingredients!!  If only they knew...;)

Mort - I didn't know it was possible to have pickles without vinegar?  What 'pickles' it if not for the vinegar then?

Brined?

In Russian and Polish the ones made in vinegar-based solution and the ones that are not have different names but I'm not sure if they do in English. But they definitely do exist.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_style_pickled_cucumber#Polish

The ..umm..liquid of the pickles made in this manner is usually cloudy, not clear like the vinegar stuff. Those are the kinds I crave cause those are the ones I'm most used to. But I've only been able to find them in Polish shops in Golders Green and that's way to far to travel just for those. :(

ETA: The wiki picture is not super-clear on what I mean when I say the liquid is cloudy.

http://bocian.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=4378

This is a bit better example. (And no, I don't drink the liquid..even with vodka. ;D)

I'm fine with the gherkins around here since I always liked sweet pickles and bread and butter pickles, too, but I do miss dill pickles, I don't think potato salad would ever be the same without them. Maybe I should have my friend bring some Vlasics when she comes next month!
